OK so the windshield wipers in my 99 TJ are not working correctly. The intermittent setting doesn't work any more. When I turn them on they just go kinda with a mind of their own. And when I turn the wipers off at any speed the blades just stop dead on the windshield instead of finishing the pass and stoping when they reach the bottom. In addition my washer fluid tank must have a slow leak somewhere in the line. When I fill it up it is empty about three days later. I've looked for a leak point but have been unable to find anything. Just curious if this has happend to anyone else

Same thing happened to my friend's Cherokee. I turned them on as a joke when he was scraping snow off and they got jammed. They would stop wherever they were in the cycle when you turned the switch off. No idea what was wrong; they fixed themselves about 1 or 2 months later. I hope you have the same luck.

Thanks for the reply jay79cj7 but mine have been doing this for about six months so I don't think they are going to fix themselves at this point. Maybe I will have to have the stealership check them out

My YJ did the same thing last year. It ended up being the wiper control switch. Hope your's in warrantied because it's an expensive little part...and a pain to change.

My wipers are Fawkt too. I no longer have intermittent (sp) wipers either. they are either on/off. the slow speed and the fast are like the same too. can it be the motor? switch? like Craig suggested. Any help please.

How expensive is expensive Craig? Because my warranty is up and I will have to pay for it. I figured it was the motor or the switch all along.

Getter Done!
If I can remember correctly, I think it was somewhere around $200....but that's Canadian money so it's probably a little cheaper for you. It's a pain to change too. There's some springs and things you have to be careful of when taking your cover off your steering column.

Have you tried changing them lately? You might want to try waxing your windsheild to help them slide over it better. Waxing the windsheild will also help improve visibility by reducing the smearing effect you see when driving at night.

Thanks again fot the info Craig. $200 is a little more than I would like to pay Canadian or US. Maybe I can just continue to live with it. I would much rather use the money for other stuff. Like going towards a lift or a winch :)

I tried living with mine too, until they completley stopped working at the worst possible time. I was returning from a road trip in the pouring rain and was about 2 hours from home...it wasn't a fun drive.

Well Craig what u just posted confirms my unspoken fear on the subject. I've always wondered if this "wackiness" would every progress into non-working windsheild wipers. So how long did you live with the wipers until they finially crapped out on you

Mine only lasted about a month before they died on me. I've been meaning to pull apart the old switch and see if I can fix it somehow. It could just be dirty contacts inside the switch or something like that but it's probably burnt out. I was just guessing on what it cost me for the new switch, I can't remember for sure. You should try calling on prices or check out some junk yards. A lot of the junk yards I've been to pull parts such as these switches out of the vehicles and have a whole bunch of them sitting inside on shelves...I'm guessing because they are costly and being exposed to rain outside in the yard could ruin them.
