Peugot 5 spd. Trans.

Hi,

My '87 Comanche came with a 5-spd Peugot transmission which according to all reports is one of the worst transmissions to ever exist.

This trans. was used, I believe, from '87 thru '89 in the Comanche and Cherokee.

My question is...has anyone had problems with this tranny? Does it break under more extreme conditions, i.e. off road?

I haven,t had any particular problems.....yet.

What might I expect? My Jeep has only 130,000 miles, mostly pavement.

Thanks,

Larry

Don't sweat all the naysayers, change the fluid at regular intervals and it should last. Mine had that many miles and I swapped a 350 in front of it, no problems.

Use a synthetic fluid if possible.

Thanks B.H.

I'll keep it maintained to keep things moving.

Yeah if you keep it maintained properly it might last a long time depending on your driving and the other mods to the jeep... but when it dies, I wouldn't spend any money fixing it or replacing it with another one... upgrade time.

Granted I only had the Jeep for a short time, and I never had an opportunity to take it on a trail, but I had an '88 YJ with that tranny and I'll say it was a sweet shifting 5 speed. They're definately not known for their strength and have been known to self destruct under rough conditions and oversize (a set of 33"ers for example) tires but on a stock Jeep they're reliable.

Re: Peugot 5 spd. Trans.

Thanks for the input...It currently works okay for my needs, but I will put something different in if it breaks.

Re: Peugot 5 spd. Trans.

I Had The Peugot 5 Speed In My Old 88 YJ And I Agree It Is The Worst Tranny Ever Made, It Started Knocking And I Thought It Was The Clutch Gone Bad, So I Dropped It And Took It To My Tranny Shop And Come To Find Out That Ever Gear In The Thing Was Chipped All To Hell, He Told Me It Would Be Cheaper To Swap In An Auto Than To Rebuild The Peugot. And I Never Used The Jeep Hard Either It Was An Everyday Driver And Wheeling Once In A While On The Weekends.

Re: Peugot 5 spd. Trans.

I agree Mud....

Here in the U.S. we make some of the best products in the world...and then we shoot ourselves in the collective foot by making things too expensive to compete.

That happens mainly due to labor costs where average U.S. workers demand (through unions and such) 25 to 30+ dollars per hour while the same products can be made overseas by workers making 4 dollars per hour.

So we all pay the price with often inferior parts from the outside or pay the really BIG bucks to go all American.

When I first learned about the French Peugot trans. in my Comanche I felt violated...It could have at least been..well.. anything BUT French...No wonder AMC couldn't survive.

I have a hard time forgiving the French anyway in WWII when they just let the Nazis stroll in and take over without a fight..and then..had to have us (U.S. and Allies ) bail them out in the end. But that's another story!
