Has anyone heard of switching out 1991 two piece front axle with a later year one piece axle shaft? I have had it with the vacuum disconnect unit.
And I have tried the $200. cable replacement gizmo. It still pops out of four wheel drive at the worst times! I can get an axle at the local boneyard if this works. Any help would be much appreciated. Bg

Hey peeps,
My wife and I are in the market for a "new" suv. We have been test driving a few for a couple months now, but last night we stopped by a VW dealership since she wanted to test drive the Tiguan.
When I was looking around I saw a 5.7 badge... sweet.
It's a 2005 GC Hemi with 50k miles on it. We test drove the new tiguan and the '05 GC. Of course... I like the jeep better, and my wife likes the Tiguan.

The fact that the jeep is bigger, faster and cheaper is what got me. She doesn't like the look of it though (it's the first year of the new body style). But she is keeping an open mind.

So my question is, does anyone have one of these jeeps? I have great experience with jeeps, but I did read about people having tranny problems with this model... is that common? Anything else I should know about?

thanks for any info.

Had a couple of bad storms the other night, I open up the driver side door and see that the whole area under the seat and into the back is filled up wit water.... ****! My windows and doors were shut tight. It seems to only happen with really heavy rain possibly when it is hitting the jeep at just the right angle. Any product recommendation for sealing up a jeep? Similar experiences..? I can fig out where the leak is coming from.

Hey all,

Just looking for a little insight here on an issue I'm having. First off, the vehicle specs:

1995 Grand Cherokee Laredo
4.0 I-6 engine
2WD
Automatic
226,491 miles

Back in August the Check Engine light came on and I noticed the volt gauge was reading in a discharge state (about 1/4 up from off position). I ran the codes and only got this one:

41 - An open or shorted condition in the generator field control circuit.

I had the charging system tested at both Autozone and Advance Auto. Autozone found a bad battery. Since it was an Advanced Auto battery, I went there to replace it. They tested it and confirmed. Replaced the battery and it appeared fine for an hour or so. Then the Check Engine light came back on. Ran the codes. Again, 41.

I tested the voltage myself using a multimeter and each time the check engine light comes on, it seems as though there is a drop in voltage on the alternator. But both Autozone and Advance say the alternator is fine.

I'm beginning to wonder if maybe the battery cables need to be replaced, or if the alternator is really failing. Another forum suggested I check the 'battery temperature sensor' that sits under the battery in the holding tray. My holding tray /is/ broken, so maybe that's the culprit.

Since this happened in August, I purchased I replacement vehicle but find I like my Jeep more. I've been going out and starting it up every day, putting it on a battery charger once a week. One thing I noticed is that sometimes, when it's started, the check engine light is off and the voltage is normal. Shut it off, start it up, light may come back on and voltage may go low.

I know there's a problem somewhere since if it's not charged every so often it will go completely dead. Anyone got suggestions?

Hi there,

anyone have a photo of the roof without the felt liner?

were all the models wired for speakers even if speakers weren't put in the hatch?
if so where does the speakers run from. I have yet to take apart my hatch but i have took off the top corner metal bracket on both sides to find no wire.

do any other taillight guards fit or could be made to fit without a torch?
as these guards seem pretty hard to find. ive been looking at land rover discovery ones...

anyone know of a bush guard that has similar mountings to fit on a jeep if it wasn't designed for a jeep (Land Rover, Toyota, etc)

Is waag the only one that makes brush guard with the bars that cover the headlights?

Thanks.

Ok so i just bought a 1991 Cherokee 4.0L from my sister. besides the basic leaks from about every lower gasket there is this amazingly loud knock coming from either around the bell housing. but only at idle when in park or any gear. Also there is an issue that keeps draining the battery in less than 5 mins. New Alternator and Battery. This is my first jeep with a jeep motor in it. I'm used to working on a Chevy 350 CID in one. I dont know where to start with either problem. I have traced connections and wires through the whole thing and dont know where the drain is coming from or if the knock and the drain are in common. And the Voltage drain doesnt occur everytime either. Please help me. If you have any reccomendations please email me. I'm on the road alot with work

Hi everyone. I just became a member and am hoping that I can get some insight into what is going on with my 2000 XJ. I bought it not too long ago...

Hi everyone. I just became a member and am hoping that I can get some insight into what is going on with my 2000 XJ. I bought it not too long ago with about 54,000 miles (currently has 103,000) and here are a few issues it has which I can't seem to figure out. I should mention that this jeep is stock.

1.) It has an erratic idle which "pulses" about ever 30secs, each time the rpm's jump about 250/400. For a while it would become very erratic then die so i replaced the IAC unit (OEM part) and it doesn't die anymore but still contains with weird idle. When the engine is hot it almost sounds like a valve it opening/closing.

2.) I am losing coolant and cannot explain where it's going :-( Not rapidly, but am losing more fluid than I would expect.

3.) When driving on the highway, occasionally, the oil pressure gauge will hit the max. If i ease off of the throttle for a while it goes back to normal. During this time the engine doesn't make any other sounds, everything seems normal. Maybe just a bad sensor? I should mention that if my coolant is at the "add" level this doesn't occur. I know that sounds strange and might just be a coincidence but I thought I should mention it.

4.) After the engine is hot and parked or idle at a light I can hear a bubbling noise from the engine. If I ease off the brake and gently apply the brake it seems to go away.

Thanks in advance,

Hello,

I have a 1988 Cherokee Laredo automatic 4x4 6cyl.

Lately, I have been having acceleration problems. It began with the surging problems that so many other Jeeps have complained about . . . as I have replaced (brand new) TPS and the Idle control sensor, cleaned throttle body, check linkage etc.

At this point more often than not the idle will be at normal when I start my Jeep . . . it will run a short while in this mode. Then the idle will rev up as the engine warms up, which requires me to turn the motor off and restart or put it in 3rd and drive.

As long as I do not let my Jeep go to 1200 RPM's it will run well. If however, I go to/over 1200 RPM's it will get stuck and this starts a problem with my Jeep . . . because it will not kick down (RPM's) when necessary, such as stopping (stuck at 1200 RPM's) now it is accelerating on its own (or untill I turn off the engine).

What I have observed lately is my accelartion (pedal) when it is accelerated (increase fuel) my RPM's go down and run normally to the engine speed. On the other hand, if I do not accelerate the RPM's go very high 2000 RPM's and will not kick down untill I accelerate to just above 1200 RPM's and it feels/sounds like the stress level of my Jeep is normal again (speed is between 45/50 miles per hour). Nevertheless, as I slow down such as to . . . lower my speed the RPM's remain stuck (1200 RPM's) and the gas and the brake become an issue as they are now working against one another (not good on snow as I slide untill I stop).

I thought it might be a worn Throttle body . . . or does my Jeep have an acceleration pedal sensor that needs replaced. If I could figure out why my RPM's get stuck at 1200 RPM's and not drop down I think I could figure out my problem as it is I have snow now and it is a little scary to drive in the mountains where I live.

Thanks, Jewel

Hey everybody, my first post, and I got a question/issue. I drive a 2004 Jeep Liberty Limited 4x4. I went away this weekend and when I pulled out of the parking space I saw a puddle. Got out and the puddle was clear liquid which had no smell. Research brought me to brake fluid, but I checked that and the levels are the same. We had some rain overnight but for the most part it's been dry. I used no AC, but I did have the fan on. Every place we stopped the puddle started again, and again it was odorless clear liquid which highly resembled water. I put piece of white paper over it and it stayed clear. The liquid is coming from the front passenger side like right under the glove compartment and where the hood starts. (I'm a car noob too, so bare with me!) The pipe that is coming from the frame like right in front of where the glove compartment is.

Attached are a photo of the pipe in the middle foreground and a picture of the liquid hitting newspaper. Is this just where water usually escapes from? Any other possibilities what it may be? Where it puddled last night was totally evaporated today.
Thanks in advance and sorry for my dumbness on describing!
