I picked up a parasite tool bar a couple of days ago. My spy killer says it took care of all the spy ware ect... but I have this stinking tool bar I hate and want rid of. Portal Search. Any idea how I can get ride of this thing. Thanks in advance tug

I had the same thing happen about a month ago. I ran my spyware program which erased it. I use Lavasoft Ad-aware 6.0 which I think I got off www.downloads.com .

Could you just go to View/toolbars and turn it off? I would also search the hard drive for that name, and delete any files that show up related. Those things usually create a folder somewhere that you can clear out. Also, try going to add/remove programs in the control panel. That might have something for it too. I hate those things that install themselves on your puter and won't let go. I use a program called spybot to clear most of that stuff out.

Tug and others,

Lavasofts Ad-Aware is definitely the best software to get rid of spyware. This is their link, there are a number of servers to choose from. Make sure you check for updates after you install the software, when you run it the first time.

Also, heed jay79cj7's advice to just turn off the toolbar if the Ad-aware doesn't work

Adaware will get rid of spyware, but if it is a toolbar, it's not neccessarily spyware, just annoying. I had the same problem after installing some software, the toolbar was a piggyback program that it took me 2 days to find and get rid of. You have to find out the name of the software co or the folder it created upon install. If the easy things (add/remove programs or changing the startup options) don't work, you'll have to find out what program is running that wasn't running before (CTRL/ALT/DEL), find the folder it is in (search in "my computer"), and delete it. When I finally found mine, my computer didn't want to delete it. It kept saying "file in use" or something, so I actually had to change the name of almost every file in that folder and delete them one by one.

I got rid of most of my spyware by going to "remove programs". I also have a program that might help you out caller "fix it utilities" . If you want a copy, PM me, and I can send you a copy of it by sanil mail. -al

i had a tool bar come up. you could turn it off and remove it from the controll panel, but everytime you reopened internet explorer it would come back up.

had to find the file that it had hidden it's self in and delete that after removing everything again.

Finally, a question where I can help.
FYI to all you LavaSoft users
LavaSoft's Ad-Aware is not the best spyware removal tool... go get Spybot's Search and Destroy.
I used Ad-Aware for a couple of years before switching. Search and Destroy does a much more thorough job than ad-aware ever did.

Thanks for all the help! You are the best. Did not show up anywhere in the control panel or tool box. It was not in the was just there and nothing seemed to get rid of it. Ad Aware took it away. Thanks again Tug owes all of you one! tug

i've used both, and am very happy with them... they both update themselves and are very effective...

often, you must delete the spyware from your registry... Start, Run, type "regedit"... from there, go to: current user, software, microsoft, internet explorer, toolbars.... then delete any entry that mentions any scumware... that should get rid of your toolbars

I agree with Jugghead. Spybot Search & Destroy seems to work better than Ad-Aware.

If you want to avoid getting Trojans and Spyware in your browser all together, dump Internet Explorer and try a good browser such as Mozilla Firefox (formerly Firebird), a free web-browser, from http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
