Re: axle id help

it's a eaton HO72 great axle, probably one of the most under rated axles, they do run a wierd gear ratio though

Re: axle id help

too add, if it is a 6 lug, it could be a HO33 1/2 ton rear axle built from 55 to 62 I think.. or it could be a HO52 built prior to 1955 was also built in a 6 lug semi float axle.

the HO72 shares a lot of parts with a 14 bolt, so if you wanted to run a 35 spline shafts, you can swap the 14 bolt shafts and carrier.

Pretty sure they had 5.14's in the 1 tons.

Good rear ends for sure (considering they ARE a 7200 lb rear end lol)

Re: axle id help

yea from my research they are pretty much unbreakable. can be shaved so they have more ground clearance they a dana 44 and are stronger and lighter then a corporate 14 bolt.. the only downside i have found about them is the newset ones are still lmost 40 years old(they stopped production in 77 or 7 i read alot of 14 bolt parts can interchange.. i wish i had the 5.14s or the 4.57sn gears but mine has 4.10s in it.. althought with the sm465 granny first i still should be able to get away runniong 40 or 42 inch tires and still have decent power. now i need to figure out how to weld it up. the way the carrier is you cannot see the spider gears at all..

Re: axle id help

If it's like a 14b you should be able to disassemble the carrier to access the spider gears. Weld them up and bolt the carrier back together.

Re: axle id help

thats what i was thinking but i have never disassembled an axle and this axle the gear pattern is perfect for being 40 plus years old the gear teeth look brand new, no chips wear patterns nothing... i may just bite the bullet and tear into the carrier. from what i read they are really easy to reset up the gears.. the 3rd member ways around 110+ pounds. but overall they weight less then a 14 bolt
