The Smittybilt XRC8 winch has served me well. I mounted the control box under the hood. It makes for a nice clean look on the front of the Jeep. I run a warn on my trail rig, but use this XRC8 on my daily driver.

Since you currently have 2:73 gears, you can only go up to a 3:54 without changing the carriers. I run 4:56 gears in a CJ5 with dana 44 front and rear with 36" tires. It does quite well on and off road. I would strongly suggest upgrading at least your rear axle to either aftermarket 1 piece...
The driving backward 20 feet or so, then throwing transmission in neutral and then shifting the t-case has always worked for me. The original owners manuals that came with the old CJ's suggest this method.
