    backspacing/gear ratio needed?

Here's a link to a gear calculator which I found on the web: Gear Calculator. It can tell you where (approximately) you'll need to re-gear to with a change in tire sizes.

    Jeep broken into ... AGAIN!

Soft top jeep--don't lock the doors, so at least they won't cut their way in. Don't leave anything valuable in it. Garage if you can.

    New tires on stock rims

Regarding the rims alone, it's more the width of the new tire that you want to look at than anything else. If, for instance, you have an 8" (wide) rim, then you could put a 12.50" width tire on it, but that would be about it. A 10.50" would be a better fit (I'm ignoring backspacing issues...

    puzzled by new noise

So you're saying that you only get it when in 4wd? Not to sound to condescending, but are you on pavement in 4wd?

New "airless" tires have you seen them?

Somebody should look into those for the trucking industry. Think of the cost savings over time, as well as the lack of retread on the interstate.

    Update

Not to hijack the thread, but what's the purpose of a shackle reversal on a YJ? I thought it was only beneficial on a Jeep with arched springs (i.e., CJ). To keep in line with the thread, congrats on the new Jeep, Matt. Maybe we'll be able to ride together some day (I'm keeping my options...

    304, 360, or 401

Bacon brings up a good point. With a 304, you might get by with the stock drive train parts. The more power you get, the more you're looking at upgrading or replacing in order to keep the transmission from dying, U-joints from breaking, etc. I have a 350 in a CJ-5. That makes plenty of power...

    Ahhh The Rain

I don't have a carpeted jeep, so I'm going only on intuition here, but isn't rust a concern in this situation? I'd want to remove the carpeting as quick as possible to let everything dry out. You can then replace the carpeting later, if you'd like. Personally, I'd leave it out and either go...

    odometer fraud

Laws are going to vary state to state. I would definitely consult with a lawyer about pursuing any remedies. Keep all your documentation. Try to find a KBB or a NADA guide from the time when you bought your Jeep in order to establish what the correct value would have been at that time...

How to spend your tax rebate check

Absolutely. The interest you save paying on the credit card will beat what you'll gain in a savings account or paying on your mortgage.

    Made into the newspaper today

I personally see both sides of the issue. Since the pro-carry on campus side seems well represented here, I'll pose the questions that disturb me. I remember being a college student and knowing lots of college students. College students are young, and sometimes prone to making bone-headed...

What year would u say this cj-5 is?

I'm guessing it's a 72 - 75 CJ-5. I think that engine is a 232 I6, which would mean that it has to be the AMC elongated engine compartment. Honestly, the proportions in the picture make me think that this is a shorter nosed 1969-71 Jeep, but I'm basing my assumption on my initial bet that the...

    Optima vs. Platinum

Unfortunately, the Yellow Top's warranty is only 24 months, with the first 12 being full replacement and the second 12 being pro-rated. I bought the battery in March of '06, meaning that I have about $6.50 credit coming to me. The Red Top's warranty is better. The Sears DieHard Platinum's...
