    Cj2a build up page

Put about a 3" lift on, with the biggest tires you can fit underneath it, weld the rear axle, and go wheeling. If the engine needs to be replaced, look for another 4cyl to swap in (or at most a 6), so that you don't abuse the rest of your driveline. The transmission and xfer case should be fine.

    Inexcusable ..... W

Our international treaty obligations are one of the highest laws of our land. We (the United States) voluntarily entered into an agreement of international law. The President is charged to uphold the obligations of the United States in international treaty regardless of his personal beliefs on...

    veteran protects american flag

There are really two issues here: (1) was the flag being flown incorrectly, and (2) was the vet entitled to take the action he did to rectify the wrong. Yes, the flag was being flown incorrectly. Typically, however, the law does not give private citizens the right to interfere with the...

Little Known Facts about Jeepz Members

Although I've been a member of this board for years, I've never seen this thread. My name, it may surprise you to know, is . . . David. I'm an attorney in Knoxville, TN. You might think that would mean that I drive a tricked out yuppie jeep. No, I drive an old CJ beater--almost always the...

    What transmission for a 86 cj7?

A T-176 is a good transmission that shouldn't be hard to hook up. They came original on CJ-7s, if I recall correctly. They don't quite qualify as heavy duty, but they're pretty decent medium duty trannies, as memory serves. See link: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/t176.htm. Note that...

What does your Jeep do for you?

My old CJ is pretty much a trail-only vehicle at this point. It's probably not strictly street legal, but we don't make too much of a fuss about that kind of thing in Tennessee. Turn signals, fenders--who needs 'em? Frankly, as I've gotten older, I value my comfort more. Driving a V-8...

    Axle tube crack

I found last week that I have a minor (I hope) axle tube crack on my Dana 44 rear where the spring perch is welded to to the tube. It's leaking gear lube, but not at a high rate. My questions involve current use and repair. Regarding current use: is the jeep still safe to off-road, provided...

Need general info on a CJ 7

Gear ratio by itself is largely irrelevant. What gears do is transfer the power of the turning drivetrain (powered by the engine) to the wheels. The ratio is simply a measure of how that is done. The higher the ratio (numerically) the more mechanical advantage is given to the engine over the...

    Need Opinion of fellow Jeepers

I'd agree with both posts. Not to get into the YJ/TJ debate too much, but I'd take the TJ if everything else is equal. I'd personally prefer a manual to an auto transmission, so that would end the debate among the three TJs right there for me. However, presuming that the transmission is a...

    Propaganda

I don't want to address our current international conflict per se, but this posting brings up an excellent point that I haven't seen explored in the media. Until at least WWII, the emotions of the populace were exploited to justify a war. Now, our wars are fought on more intellectual grounds...

    Why No More 4.0L??

I think that there may also have been a safety issue with the 4.0--less of a crush zone as compared with a V6 (or even V8), perhaps?

    Trail Ettiquette

This is a very interesting discussion. I've seen some of it before. Basically, the question I hear in various forms is whether people with little or no mechanical ability should be allowed to off-road. If you think that increasing the popularity of the sport is a good thing, then the answer...

    Jeep Accident injures friend

Let's also not forget that we need to be careful ourselves about our own safety (and that of others) when we're out of our jeeps. Don't stand directly below a parked or stopped jeep, don't stand where a jeep is going to come rocketing up a hard hill, don't stand anywhere near a winch line under...

    Looking to get started

This will sound like blasphamy on this board, but I would recommend against buying a jeep for new drivers. I am a jeep lover, but I'm 40 years old and an experienced driver. Any SUV has worse handling characteristics than a sedan. Any of the Wrangler-style jeeps (CJ, YJ, and TJ) have not only...

    Flat tow Dana 20

I'm planning a drive of about 90 miles flat-towing my 1974 CJ-5 with a Dana 20. Any suggestions regarding what are appropriate ways to flat tow? I've heard of disconnecting the rear driveshaft, but that seems difficult (I've never done it, and would hate to have to learn how on this trip)...

Beijing fires lasers at our satellites.

You post about a difficult issue--that of legal intelligence gathering. The first issue concerns imaging satellites flown over a soverign nation's land. Nations "own" the airspace over their territory, but traditionally, no entity "owns" space orbits. Thus, any nation can fly over any other...

    Tire issues

Thanks for the input. I have stock narrow width axles on a 74 CJ, so track width is a concern.

    Tire issues

I'm running 33 x 12.50 MT/R's right now. I have a V-8 with plenty of power & 3.73 gears. With my lift, it looks like I can go up to a 35" or maybe a 36" tire. The questions I have are: (1) how bad are the more aggressive treads (Super Swamper, Boggers) on the road? I saw a jeep that had...

    Top 10 Transmissions

Big omission: the omnipotent T-18: short, cast iron, great Granny gear in some versions, what's not to love?

Here I am, WOW who woulda thunk?

Best of luck to you. For what it's worth, my observation has been that those who take a break before returning to the educational system have a solid advantage. You're there because you want to be, not because it's expected of you, or you can't think of anything else to do. You also have...
