    Gearing Help Needed!

Regearing just the rear is fine . . . so long as you take out the front driveshaft, and don't ever plan to put it in 4wd. Seriously, you have to re-gear both axles, or you will have real problems when you put it in 4wd.

    Decision, decisions, decisions.

You are correct in thinking that the T-18 is stronger than a T-176. The T-18 is considered to be a heavy duty transmission, while the T-176 is considered medium duty. Having said that, the T-176 is a good transmission, and should stand up to normal use behind a V-8. Many people desire the...

    Decision, decisions, decisions.

Try looking for a late 70's/early 80's J-10 or J-20. From what I can tell on the internet, some of them came with a 360/T-18/D-20 combination. I won't pretend to know about input shaft lengths, spline counts, etc., but that should be a good place to start.

    newbie...flex questions

I've heard of lots of guys "breaking in" new lifts by removing the shocks and driving around for a while like that (I'd be careful, though).

    gear oil

Mind you I don't have one of these, so I'm speaking only second hand, but I thought ATF was proper for the limited slip differentials. I just don't want somebody to make a big mistake. I'd call the dealer and check.

    East TN moderate wheeling

I live in the Knoxville area, and would love to do some moderate wheeling. I've found that most of the 4wd clubs around here are more oriented towards very hard (lockers, 39"+, hybrids) wheeling than I want to/am able to get in to. Also, my experience with Windrock is that it's gone from a...

    New to Jeeps

Welcome to the jeep world. I just wanted to add my two cents. It looks from your posts that you might not have picked up the jeep yet. If you haven't, you might be able to get the dealer to swap out the 31" tires for the 30's that your jeep is coming with, and only pay the difference in...

    Bestop Extend-a-Trunk...or other options?

My solution was to buy a plastic tool box (approx 36" x 15" x 15") that could be padlocked and bolt it down to the back of the jeep in the place of the back seat. (I fixed the bolts to the tub and then use wing nuts and big washers inside the box so that I can remove it if I need to without...

This Is Long, But Please Read

Sounds like an apocryphal story to me. What struck me when reading it is the blurring of distinctions between being opposed to the war for political or philosophical reasons versus being anti-military to the point of leveling slanderous charges against our military members. There is a...

    Next TN Jeepz ride.

Hey guys, pardon my intrusion. I've been looking for some trail rides in East Tenn. What is this TN Jeepz event like. Any url where I can go for more info, or can someone fill me in? Where do you ride? What sort of trails?

    Total Newbie Questions...

1040522 The advice previously given is good. The one thing I'll add is this regarding lockers: most real lockers involve replacing the carrier in the diff. Differentials have usually two different sized carriers depending upon the gear ratio. The place where they change is called the...

    the jeep wave

1040660 Here's a related question. Please pardon me for possible heresy, but what's the board's feeling about waving to modified 4x4's other than Jeeps--especially FJ-40's? I find a lot more comradarie with a modified FJ-40 than I do with a sorority chick driving a stock Wrangler or a soccer...

    No Doors Illegal?

506000 First of all, the laws will vary state to state. You will need to check your local laws. If you're really curious, most states have an on-line version of their laws. A little time on the net will find them. Most of these have a search engine capability, so you can look up the...

    OX Locker

594000 I installed an Ox locker in my CJ about two months ago. So far, so good. It pretty much works as advertised. The only criticism I have so far is that when I was going downhill and had a load on the locker (wheels turning at different rates--i.e., I was turning), I couldn't get it...

    OX Locker

596000 Regarding my advice for putting a locker in the back first: All I meant was that if one is only going to lock one axle, it might as well be the rear. First, the rear axles are stronger than the front, and second, they don't adversely affect steering to the extent that front lockers do...

    OX Locker

600000 Personally, I would think hard before putting a full locker--or definitely a spool--on a Dana 35. 33" tires are about your max for that axle anyway. Now both of you guys run 4 cyls, which means that you stand less chance of breaking drive train components than someone with a V-8 does...

    OX Locker

602000 Here's my understanding: when in two wheel drive, the rear axle has to take all the torque generated by the driveline. However, when in four wheel drive, the transfer case splits this torque, sending half of it up front. Thus, the front axle only has to handle 1/2 of the torque of the...

    First gear problems

623000 There are a few possibilities. The TWO times this has happened to me, it was my linkage. I don't know what kind of jeep you're running: mine is old enough that I have a mechanical linkage, which can give you all kinds of fits. Does the jeep pull without problems when it is in gear...

advice on buying a CJ anyone?

665000 I posted a long response to the "I want a jeep" message under general chat. You might check that out for some specifics. In general, you'll save yourself a lot of grief by thoroughly checking out whichever vehicle you want to buy. All models had their pluses and minuses. My overall...
