    Welders

Miller makes good welders, both mig and stick. Both are arc, in that they use electric arcs between the electrode and welded metal. Mig is easier for beginners in that there is no learning curve in striking the arc - just pull the trigger on the mig gun. Stick, in my opinion is more versatile...

Aluminum valve cover install, question - heli-coil use?

i did the same install about 9 months ago on my 84 cj7. as best i remember, the holes are for locating pins molded into the plastic cover. the threaded holes should have 5/16-18unc threads. you can run a 5/16 bottom tap right into the existing non-threaded holes, without any drilling and have...

What does everyone do for a living?

I'm a machinist, welder and fabricator right now. Have worked mostly in machine design and CAD drafting. Also taught machine work, welding, and drafting classes for a local college for about 10 years, part-time. I, too, am a freemason and a shriner.

    ^%!#$% Carpet Adhesive!!!

i wouldn't recommend a drill/wire brush - most drills are not made for continuous use like that and the motors will burn up.

    OT: Bow Hunters

Pinion Seal MIA look at the new bear bows - my brother has one and it is a nice bow. not sure of the price, though. if you want to spend the money, the mathews sq2 is also a very nice bow.

    ^%#@$ HEATER!!!!!

the fireman beat me to it! the wire could easily have been knocked loose at the connection under the battery tray, during a heater core replacement (assuming that the connections are the same on the cj, yj, and tj). the newer jeeps may have better connections than my old cj.

    diamond plate???

bryanjeep - you may want to check with a local fab shop - the 1/4" diamond plate is expensive as it is and the shipping cost on this stuff would be expensive, since it is so heavy. i'll check pricing for you and get back with you, but it'll probably be a lot cheaper for you to get it locally...

    frame rot

don't give up on it yet. a good welder can fab some patch plates and have them welded into place in less than an hour. if there is good metal in front of and behind the patch plates, the frame should be as strong as a new one. you just don't want the patches to make up the majority of the...

    aftermarket tach in a CJ

i mounted mine on the steering column with a large hose clamp. it kinda sits over the ignition switch, not directly on top of the column

    diamond plate???

how thick is the diamond plate? we use some in our shop that is 1/4" thick. this stuff would be tough!

    gas gauge

i have no experience with this, since my gas gauge works, but a fella i know who has restored many jeeps warned me about the gas gauges. he said that the gauge sending unit inside the tank can be pulled out and sanded to remove the rust and that will fix most gauges. he said that there is a...

    frame rot

    Rear Axles Popping/Clanking

deerhunter, i have the amc 20 too. i had a clicking sound a few months ago, mostly when i really accelerated hard. it almost sounded like gears were not meshing and grinding. i never could figure out what was causing the noise, until the axle/hub completely stripped out and i could not...

    Jeep Virgin here

i can't speak too much about the simplicity of the yj/tj, but the non-computer controlled cjs are very simple to maintain and you can fix/mod about anything on them yourself without worrying about getting screwy computer codes. what part of the country are you in? i had my 258 rebuilt in march...

3" body, 2.5" shackle lift vs. 4" suspension

i agree with the other fellas. go with the suspension lift. you should check around on pricing too, $1450 sounds steep.
