i used to have a 97, now I have an 03... biggest difference I can tell is that the latches are slightly narrower on the 03. There may be more though.

I didnt notice any difference on my 2.5, or on my new 4.0 when I switched the filter over to the new jeep. But I originally got the K&N because the cheapest I could find a "cheap" paper element filter was 30 or 35 dollars and the K&N was 45 and as you said, reusable.

If you had that much dirt in the rest of the system, its very possible that the tank had a bunch in it also. If thats the case you could've just sucked a bunch of new dirt into your nice clean fuel system, causing the same problem.
