Thanks for all of the help. I ended up taking it to a mechanic and they did have to drop the tank. The hose was cracked and worn so it did have to be replaced.

So empty the tank, but do I have to drop it? If I do have to drop it is the skid plate the only thing holding the tank up? Shouldn't I support it with a jack stand or something?
