    258 timing advance

So I put my cj7 in a Trump parade last November. Made the 10mile drive, but at around mile 7 Big “O” died. How embarrassing! I pulled over and after cooling it started back up. I finished the parade and went home uneventful. Since then I haven’t been able to drive it more than 3 miles before it...

    East Coast Gears

1980 CJ7 all stock I want to replace the ring & pinion in my front Dana 30 and AMC 20 3.07 with 3.73. I found everything I need online at east coast gears. Ring gear and pinion are manufactured by Motive. Have any of you used Motive Gear and can I expect them to be OEM or better quality?

    ZDDP or Not

Need some thoughts here. I bought a 258 long block with flat tappet valve lifters which requires a ZDDP additive because the oils now days has little to no zinc. The zinc coats the cam and lifters to prevent flattening of the cam lobes during break in. I have reached the break in mileage and...

    Single DIN stereo

I bought a pioneer single din stereo to install in my '80 CJ7. I knew I would have to cut the dash and build a bracket to hold it. After receiving the radio from Amazon I took some measurements and found that I couldn't mount it in the factory slot because it will hit my defrost hose knocking...

    Heater Fan Motor

I saw a post a while back discussing replacement of the heater fan motor in cj's with one from a '73 GMC Blazer. I replaced mine in my CJ7 and wow, I now have a turbo charged heater/defroster. Thanks to whoever passed that info along. I would recommend this upgrade to anyone who hasn't already...

    AMC20 carrier bearing preload

The carrier bearing preload for an AMC20 is given as .008". Assuming that pinion depth, backlash and wear pattern are correct, would I add .008 shims or .004 on both sides to accomplish preload? I get that all afore mentioned measurements need to be taken with the correct shims on each side. I...

    Pulling a T176 and Dana 300

1980 CJ7 I can't shift my T176 into second from 1st, it just grinds. I ordered a master repair kit plus all shift forks from Morris 4x4. I had intended on pulling the trans and rebuilding it myself. I am not worried about rebuilding it but I am concerned about pulling it. Is this something a...

    Using 2wd with hubs locked

I had an '85 Toyota with manual hubs and a 4cyl 22R years ago. Many times when pulling my boat out of the water on some steeper boat ramps I would shift into 4L without locking hubs. I now own a CJ7 with a 258, AMC20, T176, Dana 300TC and Dana 30 front axle with warn premium manual hubs. I know...

Can someone tell me if TJ or YJ full doors will fit my 1980 CJ7? Will I have to make modifications for either to work?

    Paint?

I need a little help. I am beginning to think about paint for my '80 jeep cj7 frame up restore. I live in a rural area of AR and the only paint brands available to me within 50 miles are ppg OMNI and Sherwin Williams. When I hear Sherwin Williams, I think of house paint, could I be wrong? I...

    New member

Hello all, I'm glad to be joining the forum. I have wanted a jeep since I was old enough to drive (many years). I found a 1980 cj7 had minimal rust and not banged up. I have the frame done, axles, trans, and transfer case rebuilt. Welded in a few panels on the tub, stripped and painted under...

    Jeep Build

I picked this 1980 CJ7 up a long while back and have been working on it a while. I thought I would share a few pics. All bearings and seals are new in the driveline. A new 258 long block, the original was shot. The body and frame were in really good shape. Very little rust. The last pic attached...
