air shocks?

I have a 2006 Rubicon LJ and I love it. I have a motorcycle carrier that slides into the hitch on the back of the jeep. The bike I carry is a 2003 DRZ 400 Suzuki that weighs about 300 pounds. My Jeep is lifted 2.5 inches with a Rough Country lift that consist of shocks and coil springs. The Jeep rides great on the road and does great off-road.

The question is this, when I put the DRZ on the carrier to go somewhere, the Jeep will squat in the back. I know that is not unusual but, if I were to put air shocks in the back of the Jeep, would the jeep still perform as well off-road and ride the same on road? I know that I could put air in the shocks and level the Jeep out when the bike is on and, let air out to level the Jeep when I take the bike off. How well will they work on the Jeep normally?
 

Springs support the vehicle and shocks dampen the oscillation from a bump. Stiffening the shocks will take some load off the springs but will eventually fail. If you use the airbags that fit inside the springs (stiffening them) you may have better luck.
OME makes 2.5 lift that has been used for towing. Along with rancho 9000 series adjustable shocks.

Air shocks are hard on the mounts, and are only mounted to sheet metal for the upper mount. I'd go with stiffer coil springs or airbags. I've used Firestone air bags on a few vehicles, just have to use what works for your longer coils.
 

so would it last longer if I just got a different lift with heavier coil springs?
 

I'd go with stiffer coils or airbags inside the coils. Stiffer coils will hamper off road performance slighlty.
 

I got the Air Lift about 2 weeks ago. It was very easy to put on the Jeep and works great. The one thing that I was missing form the package was, the clamps for the airlines. I emailed them, using the email from their site, and told them what I was missing. They had it to my door with in a week. Great product and very little change to the ride of the Jeep.
 
I used Firestone airbags for years but only in a towing application. They are not a shock replacement and have no dampening .
Airbags work great for there intended purpose , to support temporary additional weight and level the vehicle but i would never recommend them to lift a vehicle or as a shock replacement.
 

Look at old man emu, blisten, or even rancho. the first two are great. You could call and tell them what lift you have and they will set you up with the correct parts.
