CJ& Fuel lines

I bought an 84CJ7 and the previous owner replaced the fuel tank, sending unit and lines. He used 5/16 for mostly everything he replaced. I replaced the return line with stainless from 4WD because rubber was used past the catalytic converter. Noticed the return was 1/4" and looking at inlets for check valve, tank itself etc I think 5/16 was too big. Any one no what fuel line is suppose to be used to and from the tank???
