GL5 or GL3?

Hello everybody,

Well, scanning through the different topics, I found something about GL5 gear oil being detrimental to a manual (AX-15) transmission. Something was said that Chrysler screwed up and recomended the wrong gear oil and that GL5's chemistry will ruin the synchros. Well, I had just gone out and had bought 75w90 Mobil 1 full synthetic which is GL5 compliant and am now wondering if I should go return it and search out GL3 compliant gear oil. Have not really seen GL3 compliant gear oil that I know of. I am now currently holding off on the manual trans oil change till I get more info. Please help. Thank you.

RE: How much of a motor mount lift is needed for a flat bell

|I believe you will be safe with the full synthetic, regardless of it's "compliance". I believe the issue was with the organic GL5 (or was it the GL3?????) eroding the brass in the transmission. Perhaps someone can correct me or give you more confidence, but if it were me, I'd throw the synthetic in.

RE: Windshield wipers

Don't use the Mobil 1, it's ruined a lot of the AisinWarner AX transmissions. The high sulfur content of the GL5 is corrosive to the soft brass synchronizers of these trannies.

I recommend Redline MT90, it's a synthetic that's easy on the synchros and shifts smooth even when cold. It may also help a transmission that already has notchy shifting due to failing synchros. I get mine from www.summitracing.com .

Summthin' to make you go "WTF?!?"

Thanx much for correcting me, Bounty.......hope I didn't steer anybody wrong :(

No problem, common mistake. I too once thought it was okay stuff, especially since it was synthetic.
