RE: Transfercase rattle on a 99 TJ
Hey all. My TJ has been making some weird noise for about a week. It pretty much sounds like a steam locomotive whenever I get up to speed. I think it's something in the drive train but I'm not really sure. It definitely varies with speed. Almost like a whirring, chugging noise. I can't tell if it's coming from directly underneath or somewhere near the back. It always makes the sound, but it does get quieter when I have the clutch in or the transmission is out of gear and I'm coasting. I can still hear it though. It's not real loud, i.e., if I have the radio on at a audible level, I can't hear it. But when the radio is off, I can definitely hear it. I checked the rear diff fluid and it looks fine, but I guess it could still be that. The rear u-joints seem tight. The only other thing I can think of is rear brakes or throw out bearing. Any thoughts would be welcome.
