steering problems

I have a cj5 w/ it original steering box powered by a chevy 350 (custom hose). I have a 4inch lift w/ 1 inch shackles and 33's. The sway bar is hooked up. I cannot drive over 45 because the steering wanders too much, way too much (It feels real dangerous). Can I tighten anything in the steering box or does anyone know what can cure some of this? :-? Do you have a steering stabilizer or dampner???
Also you can get a steering box brace, and if
that doesn't work you are in for some $$$$$

You may want to check your wheel bearings. If they are loose it can be causing some of your wander. It will costs you nothing and may help rule out part or all of your problem.

Definitly do not install a steering stabalizer at this point. It will only mask the problem and make it harder to figure out. The streering on your jeep has alot of places you could get play from. The only way to rule things out are physical inspection while someone turns the wheel back and forth. It sounds kinda dum but i dont know of any other way. Start at the steering column and work your way down. There are u-joints in the column which wear out. Thier could be some slop in the box. Check all your tie-rod ends for play. Did you use quality shackles that have the two plates welded together so they dont rock. After a lift on a one of my jeeps I noticed rocking where the shackle mounts to the frame. Welding the shackle hangers to frame helped tremendously. Since you did an egine swap are you turning the pump to fast? Did this happen after you did something like the lift or engine swap that should lead to to figure it out. A drop pitman arm would not hurt but wouldnt cause play in the wheel. Bearings are a long shot unless you have not done your brakes in a very long time and did not repack the bearings and did not tighten the nuts on the hub tight enough. Youll find it. Typical of CJ's. The newer steering boxes can be tightened, there is a set screw on the box, don't know if you'rs is similar or not. Only other thing is to replace the steering box.

New spring bushings also help, poyurethane is the best to prevent wander.[addsig]
