Hopefully, you all can give me some great advice. My Jeep is 80% on road, and about half of that is hiway use,...Im puttin 32's on my 6 cyl 02 TJ. Is it really worth the money for the K&N FIPK kit ? Will it realistically help with increased airflow=little more power+increased gas mileage ? I found it for $235.00. ALSO, what the skinny on cat back exhausts ? I hear anything from, waste of money, to well worth it. I definately dont want my Jeep sounding like a postal truck ! If i do cat back, ive narrowed it down to Borla or Banks. Any advice would be appreciated ! Thanx

the banks cat back sounds great, my dad has one on his rubi and it just has the nicest sound, very smooth and mellow and slightly menacing. cat backs are only worth the investment if you have the extra money to do it, but they sure do sound great

RE: sorry.. been busy

I have the banks cat back too, have had it for a few months now. The thing is I can't really give a fair comparison since my exhaust was literally garbage hanging on for the ride. Sounds alot nicer, and the power gains are pretty good but nothing super noticable. I put in a high flow catco cat and the banks head pipe too... I'll be putting in their header when I rebuild the beat 4.0.

Cat-back systems are nice and they do improve power, but they will never show their true potential if bolted behind a restrictive factory manifold, head pipe, and cat.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with either the Borla or the Banks headers or exhaust systems. I don't really like the mufflers that come with either exhaust, but that's just preference, again those are both nice systems. The thing that nags at me about the Banks systems is the price. If you are going to pay $400 for a header, why not spend $450 and get a far superior grade of stainless with the Borla. The price of the Banks header needs to come down for it to be any real bargain compared to Borla.
The amount of power increase you can expect from a header is determined by it's inside diameter, primary length, and collector diameter and length. Going on that, a SS header offers no more real power advantages than a similarly made mild steel header. The same principle applies to the whole exhaust system. If you've got the bucks go for the SS and don't look back, but if you're just looking for some more ponies under the hood, it can be done alot cheaper.

adding a 2" lift to front

John, or jps4jeeps ... has a borla exhaust, and if I'm not mistaken he is not happy with it. Well he wasn't when I met his at PAP last spring....

RE: Broken window

So, without a header its NOT worth it ?

It will still be somewhat of a benefit because the factory muffler is overly restrictive. A gutted cat and a quality cat back system will open it up a little bit and give it a nice sound. I prefer to completely remove the factory cat to avoid the hollow sound you get from a gutted one, but I've done several both ways and I've been happy with both setups. I'm a redneck though, so I like the loud exhaust :)

Don't waste the money on a FIPK, make your own or buy a similar but less expensive setup from www.rustysoffroad.com . The FIPK is WAY overpriced for some tube and a conical filter.

I agree! $235 is WAY too much. Got mine off eBay for around $60. Had to do a little tweekin' to make it fit, but it works great.
