Cherokee cold starting questions.

RE: Re: RE: aussie locker

Hello, I have a 92 Cherokee laredo with a 4 liter engine. 156,000 miles
As of late, When I start it first thing in the morning, it skips a little bit and then 90 seconds later or so, it smoothes right out. Also, when the vehicle is warm but sits for an hour, when i go to start it up, I get a little tapping for a second or 2 and then it quiets right down. When I start it in the morning, this tapping is absent. Can anyone help?? A lifter maybe? Other than this the jeep runs great. Also, does this engine have the plate on the side to change the lifters or does the head have to come off. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oil pressure when started is 40 psi according to the gauge, then 15 psi once warm at idle and about 30 psi at highway speeds. Plugs, wires, distributor, and rotor are all brand new. Thanks, Jim.

RE: Stepping Down

No plate on the side, the valve cover has to come off you fish out the lifters.

A cracked exhaust manifold is common at the Y pipe, and a common source of most ticking.

As for the cold start, I'd do a complete tune-up and include a good bench cleaning of the throttle body.
