Sure it would be reckless to just throw a strap over a ball. As soon as the ball became the lower of the two it would come loose. A little common sense goes a long way.

Uh, did I not first post:

You simply choke the strap around the whole works. It's the same as what you are describing with a shackle except the ball mount is wider than a stock YJ shackle side plate and a heck of a lot less likely to cut a strap.

No contridiction at all. My point was that you need to choke the strap, not simply throw it over a ball.

But obviously that's too much work for some of you all. I guess to you, it's easier and safer to lay down in some mud, get under an off camber Jeep, and wrap a chain around an axle.

No shots, merely stating that if that is your method of recovery, and we are on the trail together at some point, your all by yourself. I would not be part of something like that. Sorry if you take offense to that.

omg, i can wheel almost anywhere here. mountians are maybe 10 minutes away and the river (when its low enough) is only 5. if you want even better 4x4ing its maybe 20-30 minute drive,
