1984 Cherokee Chief?

Looks like a great forum!

I have owned a couple of jeeps we had a 93 Cherokee we loved, my son totalled it last winter...
We also have a 98 Cherokee my wife drives everyday, we also like it.

The 93 had that super straight line six cylinder in it, I really liked that engine, we had 250K plus and was still going strong.

My question:

I have a chance to pick up a 1984 Cherokee Chief. The guy selling it tells me he installed a rebuilt engine in it a few years ago. He is an older guy with four other trucks, he figures the engine has less than 20K on it. It is the same type engine that came in it, a six cylinder, but he said a chevy engine? Seems like I remeber something about that not being a very good engine option? I am told the Jeep is in great shape and runs like new.

Is the engine a shop stopper?

He also said it gets pretty good gas milage for a jeep, like 20 +?

Sounds like it is the first year XJ that came with the 2.8L v6, an anemic little Chevy motor. Crappy motor, but if it's rebuilt, who knows. Take a look and see.
