lift kit question of 2000 XJ

I just bought a really nice 2000 XJ. I am very excited about it. Question: What is the biggest lift I can do without driveline issues and other complications? I'm not looking to do serious rock crawling and such. I want to run 30 or 31" tires if possible with a minimal lift.

I'm pretty mechanical. Is it reasonable to assume I can install the lift kit myself?

2 1/2 inch to 3 inches with the 31" tires should be sufficient. You might want to consider a little offset on the wheels when you put bigger tires on so it doesn't rub.
