04 cherokee differential gear problem

04 grand Cherokee special edition 6 cylinder 4.0 engine 4x4
Turns on fine...switch gear to reverse or drive and a scraping sound starts on bottom of jeep ...
Mechanic friend said the differential gear was shot due to a difference in the rear passenger side tire being a different size.
Need second opinion.. what are yours ?
 
If the size of the tires is different, then it would do those noises...
Why do you use different sizes????
 
It may be the transfer case depending on model. Check the round tag attached to the rear of the transfer case and let us know the model number.

The full-time transfer cases found in Grand Cherokee's are very particular as to what fluid is used. Your Jeep is about the age when the viscous coupling in the transfer case begins to go south.
