2003 jeep liberty problem.

So I am posting for my mother who has a 2003 jeep liberty. Tonight when she got home the RPM gauge started bouncing back and forth from 0 to 7 and the oil light came on. She shut off the engine and now it won't start again. It has about 120,000 miles and is regularly maintained. Does anyone know what could have caused this or possibly how to fix it?

Do you know if it's giving any error codes?

To get the codes, cycle the ignition key On - Off - On - Off – On within 5 seconds. The odometer will show the P-code. If there are no codes, “Done” will appear. A code P1684 shows that the memory has been cleared recently and is not necessarily a problem.

We found out the problem. The Camshaft positioning sensor(sorry if that is spelt horribly wrong) and another sensor went out at the same time. We took it to our mechanic and they had it fixed in two hours. Runs great now.
