barn smell from ac

When I turn on my AC in my '96 Gr Cherokee, it smells like a barn and I don't know what's causing it or where the problem is. Any ideas? email at Fgalaxieman@hotmail.com

There may be mold growing on the A/C evaporator coils. This will/can happen if the evaporator drian hose is clogged and water sits in there for some time. See if there is water dripping from under the passenger footwell area under the car while or after the A/C has been running.

Another possibility is that you are smelling an Antifreeze leak from the heater core. If there is any indication this is happening, don't run the ventilation system until the core is replaced (antifreeze is a major health hazard! :-O)

Nick has it pegged...one or the other..maybe both..mold is also a possible health risk. Even a leak in the heater core too small to leave much obvious evidence can leak enough to stink pretty bad, especially if you have a strong coolant solution.[addsig]
