1990 Wagoneer

I am thinking about buying a 1990 Wagoneer from a person and they said it ran fine but the fuel pump needs to be replaced. They said if you shot starting fluid in the carburator it will fire up and then die after it starts.They checked the rails and didn't see any fuel. Does it sound logical that it would be the fuel pump? Thanks

sounds like it's not getting fuel if it will run on starting fluid. Yes, the fuel pump could be the reason. It could also be something else.

Could be a clogged fuel filter, or a bad fuel line. Could also be the wiring for the fuel pump.

What is the asking price? Hope it's not much.

What engine?

I only ask because on the 360 V8 in my brother's 86 Grand Waggy, it had a mechanical fuel pump, and it exhibited the exact same symptoms... Changed the fuel pump, poured some gas in the carb, and she fired right up... Wasn't too hard to do either. Could also be a broken line, clogged filter, or if electric in-tank fuel pump, the relay, the wiring, the pump, so on and so on...
