What a pain!!!!

I have a 97 grand limited and everything runs and works awesome except the hatch latch.. WTH!!!! Ive taken it apart and lubed it up but it still only works for the first three or so times. Any clues on what to do or just buy a new release for it?? Thanks all

I have a 98 grand limited. you can hear the lock and unlock but the tailgate won't open. I see the link you have provided but what am i looking for?

97-01 XJ and 93-98 ZJ have common problem over time. Alot of dirt and grime collect in there. Either handle/spring mech busted ( seviced with new handle) or Latch on tailgate needs replacing.
