Hey guys,

I have something weird gojng on with the wiring in the Cherokee.
I turn on the heat or the A\C and the part time light on the diag board lights up.
I took a look underneath the steering wheel and at the fuse box and whoever had it before did some funky wiring.
does anyone have a pic of the underside of their dash for the 88 XJ...there's a couple things that I would like to compare and figure out.
The previous owner stripped out a couple of things he had custom installed and I'm curious as to where or what these wires belong to.

Thanks

Hi,

Well my first thought when you mentioned A/C and PART TIME light was Vacuum Leak or low vacuum since the A/C dampers and control are vacuum controlled and the PART TIME light is activate by a vacuum switch (under the hood on the passenger fender). There is no relay for this light, it is directly connected to the switch. Also, you might try and see if the front axle motor engages with the A/C on. I'll get a picture up for you of my '88 wiring. What i've noticed is some things look strange but are original wiring and are wired correctly.

I just bought a 88 XJ and just climbed out from most of three days under the dash. Guy that had it before me, liked to wire up add ons, that stopped working long ago. I removed them all, and rewired many things back to the original wireing scheme. If you give me the wire color and/or what it goes to, I can probably figure something out.

XJNick sounds like he might have a better idea, sounds like maybe the vacumn harness is crossed up, wrong hose on the wrong connector.

I´ve got a vacumn line running under the battery, through the headlight/radiator clip, and I don´t have the slightest idea where it goes or what it does. Jeeps you got to love them or hate em.

Wouldn´t it be funny to have to turn on your A/C to get full time 4X. Know it´s just an indicator light, but stranger things have happened.

Check out the ground splice (black wires), left side of the bottom dash panel (and the mounting screw for the bottom dash panel) might be one thing trying to ground through another, because the ground is disconnected.[addsig]

Hi,

Here are two pictures of my fusebox area (below). Note in the fuse in its own holder, that's original. Also note the wires plugged into the front of the fuse block. Those are original (one is for trailer harness, one's for ignition). You can also see the Clutch master cylinder, which they placed right above the fuse block . Everytime that goes out, it leaks hydralic fluid into the fuse block :-O.

Mudderchuck, the vacuum line under your battery is from the Vacuum Reservoir located in the grill area by the headlight. This resorvoir provides vacuum for the A/C controls and Cruise Control, (and possibly the 4 wheel drive). There should also be a big vacuum line which is the source line.
