85 Jeep Starter Bolts

I recently purchased a 85 Jeep Cherokee 2.5L 4cyl. The starter is out and needs replacing. I've tried to take the starter off but can not get a socket to stay on the bolt heads. Actually the bolt heads are not the normal hex head, they look a lot like a torx head. I purchased a set of what was called Star sockets that are sized E6-E16 or something like that and still they didnt' seem to fit just right. I used all types of sockets and none seem to fit. The bolts go straight up through the starter. Does anyone know what type of socket fits these bolts or how to get them out? Thanks

what engine swap for ye olde cherokee?

when i took my starter out of my 86 2.5 L i had to pull out ye olde vice grips. and with no space its not easy. be careful alot of the nuts and boltsin our cherokees are funy sizes that are somewhere in between metric and standard.
