Acceleration Hesitation

What is the deal! I have to ease my gas pedal or I will get a bad hesitation in the response andsometimes it will backfire if I hit it harder and if I hit it even harder than that I the jeep will shut off. What is the deal? I've got a 76 cj7 with a v-8 and a holley carb and edlebrock intake.

classic symptoms of fuel starvation and probably the culprit is the acceleration pump on that holley - known for leaking back.

what's it look like when you pump the throttle and you're looking into the venturies?

engine off.

you should see two very strong jets of fuel shooting into the intake.

if not, it's your accel pump.
