I've recently replaced an axle in my 84 cj. It's a pretty straight-forward operation.

1. Jack up and support the Jeep.
2. Remove the tire.
3. Remove the brake drum and all brake parts. You'll have to disconnect the brake line at this point.
4. Remove the brake backing plate and bearing/seal retainer.
5. Pull the axle out of the diff housing. A puller will be required for this.
6. Insert new axle and reverse the disassembly steps.

Don't forget to put in a new seal and bleed the brakes.
