Sounds like something is binding in the transfer case, near the front output. Is the transfer case the NP207?[addsig]

No viscous coupling on an '87 YJ, I thought those were only found in full-time 4wd like the Quadratrac?[addsig]

If it were something binding in the front axle, it would do it in both 2wd and 4wd.

Which front tire locks and drags in 4wd?

The transfer case may be shot to the point the front output spins fine with no load (no driveshaft) but binds when a torque load is applied.[addsig]
