Channel 24

It depends. Anywhere from 20-300. A reasonable one for trail use, b/w 40-150 depending on how many features you want, the brand, etc.

Cobra 25's are good reliable radios. They can be had with a few different features. The Cobra 75 is kinda neat because you don't have a big box like normal, but I'm not a huge fan of it. My dad has that one in his Rubi. I had a Uniden for a while, it worked pretty good. Some guys are using the tougher Unidens that are made to go in construction equipment, they seem to stand up to more. I can't remember the names of those at the moment, but the one I had I got at Walmart a long time ago, it held up till I eventually gave up on having a top.

Having adjustable SWR's on your radio is a really nice feature though. Weather channels are pretty cool too. Just get a decent radio, a good antenna, and tune it right and it'll do good. Like I said the Cobra 25 series are great dependable radios. Just go to www.cobra.com or www.uniden.com and look.

and a cobra 142 GTL

galaxy has prooved to me to be a great radio. dont matter what ive heard.

I've had tons of radios in my time and I'd have to say that Galaxy radios would have to be at the top of my list. All the radios I have left are packed away. The last mobile that I was running was a DX88HL and it was quite a rig.

My last base:

A few other bases I have:

Some of the old mobiles that have seen jeep duty:

And a whole lot of other beaters that they don't even mention.

And the absolute worst radio I've ever owned:

The RCI was nice to start out but didn't make it long mounted in my old pickup.

Oh, and to answer the original question that this post spun off of. 23 channel radios are fantastic for beating around the trails with. Just pick a couple up for cheap at the flea market and get yourself a good antenna and you'll be set.

Here's another tip - If you've only got a hundred bucks to drop on the setup - buy a $90 antenna and a $10 radio.

OK enough time wasted on this

How do you tune a CB?
I had a Cobra once upon a time that worked great and I never did anything but turn it on. Now I have a smaller, newer Uniden with a 3' Firestick. On the trail, I can't hear people that are more than 200' away, but they can hear me.

You can tune a CB, but you can't tuna fish!

Get an SWR meter, hook it up betwixt the CB and the antenna, and follow the instructions. Some antennae have screws in the top to tune them, others you have to cut off a little piece at the top.

The receive end doesn't really matter as far as the Standing Wave Ratio (SWR). If they can hear you but you can't hear them then chances are their SWR is too high. Getting your SWR as low as you can will keep you from burning out the transmit side of your radio.

Check your local truck stop and I'll bet that they can hook you up with someone that can tune it for you for next to nothing.
