You Gotta Be Kidding Me......

So, the courts upheld Scooter Libby's conviction and ruled that he be sent to prison to serve out his sentence for exposing the identity of Valerie Plame, which, in essence, could have been a death sentence for her. But, the worthless ****ing sack of ****, Dubya Bush, has commuted his sentence. I've read several articles from both sides of the political fence, conservative and liberal, Democrat and Republican, and one word seems to be peppered throughout all of them: corruption. And I agree.

This ranks right up there with Gerald Ford's pardon of Richard Nixon, only I see it as a far worse travesty of justice and abuse of office. By exposing her identity, Libby pushed her out of cover and into the crosshairs of hitmen around the globe. Not just her, but her family as well. What he did can be construed as attempted murder. Yet it's not just the violation of Valerie Plame that has me up in arms, it's the violation of our National Security. By exposing Plame, Libby put other operatives at risk, and with them tomes of information the revelation of which could be fatal to our country had those operatives been compromised as well.

That Dubya can overlook the perils of that transgression by Libby, and think only of his own political career and that of a friend is also a blatant rape of our most sacred office. The molestation of our legal system, even at the highest levels, confirms to me, and I'm guessing a vast majority of my fellow Americans, a genuine disregard for the morals and values this country was founded on. Furthermore, it reveals a condescending apathy towards the people who elected him. I surmise from that "Get Out of Jail Free Card" that he passed along, we can plainly see where Dubya's loyalties lie. Apparently, they do not lie with his country.

what did Libby get convicted of, lying to prosecutors..?
Isn't that what they put Martha Stewart in for?

Seems like thats that they go for more and more these days.
The investigators can lie their arse off to you and tell you everyone else is squealing on you in order to get you to talk and it's ok, but you lie to them and it's jail for you. That part of it, I don't think is right.

There are dirtbags on both sides of the political aisle. :x Although the war on terror must be fought, there are still people in this country who believe it is President Bush that brought down the World Trade Center:crazy: I do not agree with everything the Pres has done, but I DO like dead terrorist. :bomb:

There are always two sides to every story Sparky.

March 7, 2007 -- Democrats and Bush-bashers in the media are chortling with glee, and special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald has a high-level scalp on his belt.

Scooter Libby's.

Thus ends (pending appeals) a 38-month investigation into the so-called Plamegate case.

Despite the jury's guilty verdict yesterday on four of five counts, it's fair to say that Fitzgerald added nothing to what was well known about the question that ostensibly prompted this probe in the first place: Who leaked CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson's name to columnist Robert Novak?

The answer, as Fitzgerald knew for three years, was then-Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage - in an off-hand conversation, not a leak.

And since Armitage was a critic of the Iraq war, that pretty much shot down any suggestion that the White House had deliberately sought to "out" Plame in order to sabotage her husband's public criticism of Bush's Iraq policy.

So what was this all about?

Scoring points against Bush.

That much is obvious, given prosecutor Fitzgerald's conduct during Libby's trial.

It's not just that his closing argument was blatantly political, charging that Libby's boss, Vice President **** Cheney, had orchestrated the leak of Plame's name in order to discredit her husband.

In fact, Fitzgerald throughout the case seemed to violate a central rule set down by the judge: Valerie Plame Wilson's actual status at the CIA was wholly irrelevant to the charges against Libby. Whether or not she was a covert agent - meaning disclosure of her name might be a crime - didn't matter.

Yet Fitzgerald broadly suggested that Libby had been "discussing something . . . that could lead to people being killed."

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid was quick to hail yesterday's verdict, saying: "It's about time someone in the Bush administration has been held accountable for the campaign to manipulate intelligence and discredit war critics."

But nothing at the trial even hinted at the administration having manipulated intelligence.

In the end, the jury seemed wholly confused by the case. Indeed, just an hour before delivering its verdict, after 10 days of deliberations, the jurors were sending out notes trying to figure out precisely what Libby was accused of having done.

Maybe the jury was less interested in that little detail than in just going home.

Taken at face value, the verdict means that the jury refused to believe Scooter Libby's claim of having a bad memory - though the witnesses against him all showed equally bad, even conflicting, recollections about the same event.

Libby's lawyers yesterday confidently predicted he'll be vindicated on appeal.

He shouldn't have to wait.

President Bush should make things right - by pardoning Libby.

Sure, he'd take a lot of political heat for it. But Libby was in the dock because of politics - and turnabout is fair play.

Free Scooter Libby.

So when it was Bill and Hillary and their "I do not recall" that's believable but when Scooter does it we get the "He's LYING, crucify him!"

Kind of a double standard there isn't it?

Not that I want to defend W at this point. After the immigration crap he's been pushing he's no friend of mine.

If our politicians would actually try to run the country instead of playing "gotcha!" with each other we might not be watching the decline of our great nation.

The GOP and the DNC are both 99% bottom feeding scum. The right and left can continue going tit for tat as long as they want. Both sides are rife with corruption and by focusing on the horrible GOP or the terrible DNC they give the public bread and circuses so the people don't notice that these dirtbags have run our country into the ground.

What really burns me is that dumb b***h Paris Hilton only had to serve half her original sentance. I mean come on! If we're going to start handing out pardons for acts against national security........:p

I'm thinking a commuted sentence means Libby won't be telling what he knows.

The only word that comes to my mind is...........impeachment. Unfortunately, there's not enough time left in his term - nobody's going to try it. Just heard on the news that ol' "W" has the lowest approval rating in history (mind you, they probably didn't start tracking that 'til the late 20th century).

He's worried me since day one (which I believe I stated here)...........my mind hasn't changed.

That's all just dandy, 90, but this thread ain't about Clinton. If you wanna b1tch about him, start your own thread.

That's all just dandy, 90, but this thread ain't about Clinton. If you wanna b1tch about him, start your own thread.

No Sparky, I just wanted to show that most every president makes pardons and sentence commutations.

The real thing about the Libby deal is that the guy who actually leaked the name of the CIA agent is still walking around free. Libby was only found guilty of lying.
And they gave him, 30 freaking months for that? Come on. The whole case was politically motivated and the prosecutor wanted to bring down some of Bush's cronies.

I think Bush should have pardoned Libby, but the moron screws around with a commuted sentence, Bush can't even do a pardon all the way and get that right, the idot.

There are no substantial grounds to impeach him, and there never were. If there were they would have done it long ago.

Scooter Libby was Mark Rich's attorney. That prosecutor has a personal vendetta against him and although Bush has really ****ed me off throughout the last year or so, I think it was not totally unwarranted to do what he did for Libby.

As for the Clinton post from 90XJay, Sparky the point he was making was that Clinton pardoned some real dirtbags, and we never heard a peep from you. It only further shows that you take any chance you have to complain about Bush. There are much more pertinent issues at hand today, and if you want to bash Bush there are bigger, more disturbing issues like the TREASONOUS immigration bill that him, McCain, and thet drunk Ted Kennedy tried to slam us with.

My point (and obviously 90's as well) is that the use of pardons and this sort of executive privilege has been used and abused by second term presidents since the beginning, and if you want to make it seem as an outlandish exception or be surprised by it you are only kidding yourself.

It won't be his last, hopefully he won't pardon all the illegals  and hopefully he will not follow Clinton's footsteps. Old Slick Willie took pardoning to a whole new level. I wouldn't be surprised if Bush did it too, or worse, one-upped him by going even further.

They both suck.

TC, the reason you never heard a peep out of me when Clinton pardoned anyone is that I was not a member of this board when Clinton was president. I'm not one to start a thread and say, "OMG, look what President Taft did about social reform!!!". What erked me about 90's post is that no matter what is said about what Bush does today, you or he always come back with a slam against Clinton, or a slam against Dems in general. Instead of intelligently discussing the topic of the thread, you turn it into a political debate about the evils of the Democrats.

I don't give a **** about who Clinton pardoned 8 years ago, nor do I give a **** about who Bush pardoned last month. This thread is about Bush's commutation of the sentence of a very dangerous man this week, and that it was done solely for political, if not monetary, gain.

a very dangerous man
So, a 30 month sentence would have made us all safer? Gimme a break... dangerous. That's laughable.

Like I said, I am not exactly fond of "W" right now. As a matter of fact I'm disgusted with him, but it is of my opinion that this issue is neither a big deal, nor should discussion of it take precedence over the more pertinent matters at hand.

You cant change it and it is far from being grounds for impeachment. Anything else is just needless whining.

Ok,.. so from now on if someone makes a comment about anything, nobody is allowed to post any example of a similar or contrasting anything for comparison?

Allrighty then..

so what was it that Libby did that was so horrible again???
OH, he LIED.

So BUSH is wrong for not making a man serve a prison sentence for lying, and the left is crying foul about that. The same people who praised Clinton for "coming clean" and admitting that he lied.

Yeah, I sure don't see a double standard there.

If ya'll want to bash Bush, bash his amnesty deal. Easy target, 80% of the US was against it, and he is still trying to push it through.

Sparky, could you tell me why it is that you think Scooter Libby is "dangerous"?

Libby was NOT the one who leaked the info. Did you understand that?

Nobody's making you read or respond to this thread, so why don't you just move on if that's your opinion?

Allrighty then..

Yeah, 90, that's exactly what I said.

What is it about you and TC that gets you both so mad you act like children when someone says anything negative about Bush? This post and TC's post above are prime examples of the behavior this board has come to expect and regret when any discussion goes against your way of thinking. Your post about all of Clinton's pardons had absolutely nothing to do with the original topic, nor in any way did it do anything constructive to debate the original topic. It was posted solely to take the focus off of Bush's actions by pointing out something someone else did years ago. If you have something topical and relevant to say as to why you don't agree with my post or why you don't think Libby should go to jail, then fine, go ahead and post it. But just two long lists of people pardoned by Clinton do neither. If you're not just doing it to bash Clinton, why didn't you mention any of the other pardons given by Bush or by any other president? Again, you and TC's childish behavior has given me a reminder of why I took a vacation from this board the last time, and I guess it's time to do so again. That's a shame, too, because I enjoy pretty much all but two people here and if those two people would take a permanent vacation from here, this board would have a lot more members. So, take a hint.
