i am not sure if i need a charcoal canister or not?

I am not sure if my jeep needs one, i have a 1981 jeep cj7 and i dont know if i need one, when i bought it from the seller there was not one in there and im not sure if i need it, it seems to be an important part so it would help if someone could help me.

The charcoal canister was used as part of smog control. I have an 82 and do not run the charcoal canister. I ran the vent line as high as I could to prevent mud and water entry. Plus the big reason to not use it: I have not been able to locate one anywhere. Hope this helps.

They are generic GM canisters. The reason for them is to keep from wasting fuel vapor. It's also to keep people from getting poisoned from the vapors and getting cancer
