    Over my head???

    the fix is not that bad , get the front striped off good , bumper grill and other areas before trying to straighten , the radiator support will pull out easier and is more flexible with less tied into it and then you can see what needs fixed in the engine area , that damage looks worse than it...

    Transmission grind from 1st to 2nd, then really tough to go from 2nd to 3rd.

    check your clutch oil level you can try and change out the transmission oil to penzoil synchromesh or something similar , I use red line in my car , see if any of that helps but it is possible the the synchronizers are going out in transmission

    Which steering part to diagnose?

    First off I would have some one turn the wheel back an forth while you look to see were the play is underneath the jeep , could be the steering box which I think you can adjust to make better , but I would check underneath before doing anything to try and trace it down

    if the timing is off can cause overheating , as it appears you have checked everything else,,change the thermostat and maybe try a good flush of the system , and as stated above a radiator cap can cause the issue as well,,and if its a high mileage motor I would rule out a water jacket clogged on...
