    timing on 4.2l

FWIW, I just redid the timing on my '87, and I think the engine is running better now that I reset it to 9 degrees at ~1600 rpm instead of at idle. I have a Weber and have Nuttered it.

89 yj 4.2 startin stallin problem

actually, it turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator I put on in front of the Weber...one of those Mr. Gasket jobs...I turned it up from 3.5 to 5.5 and THAT problem went away.

89 yj 4.2 startin stallin problem

Happens a lot. Look at the manifolds in the book and on the Jeep sometime and see if you can get the bolts to match up! Wow, the ignition module is about the last thing I have left on the engine that I haven't changed yet. I have a similar problem--the Jeep will cut out sometimes at random...

    York air compressor - howto?

I understand I can get these York compressors off late 70s-early 80s AMCs, Fords, or Volvos. I guess there's no guarantee the Ford or Volvo version would bolt to my bracket, but one off an AMC 258 would? Also, since I have a serpentine belt, can I take the pulley off my a/c if needed? Just...

    York air compressor - howto?

I would like to take the nonfunctional a/c out of my 87 YJ and put in something useful. I've seen some references to installing a York air compressor that runs off a belt, but I can't find a thread where how it's done is actually described. I did find this link: York air compressor for...

    1987 Jeep Wrangler Laredo

My project...bought it for $2000 for my wife's wedding present last year. Today it runs again! Took the head off and had it cleaned up at a machine shop and did the Team Rush ignition while I was at it.

Trying to crank kills electrical system

Like I said, it was a problem that only fixed itself when I removed and replaced the red battery cable, so I don't think it was the ground. So far shining up the positive terminals has done the trick. There's another little problem that I've had since I bought this old relic...the PO said...

Trying to crank kills electrical system

terminals I took a file to the inside of the red terminal and filed all the ring connectors at the starter relay until they were shiny, and now it's starting right up again. Hope it lasts!

Trying to crank kills electrical system

It's an 87 Wrangler Laredo with a 258, automatic, cruise control, a/c, all the nice bells and whistles to break. I've replaced the ignition switch, and that wasn't the problem either. I turned the key to start and the relay clicked, power didn't cut, but the starter didn't crank. I flipped...

Trying to crank kills electrical system

I just exchanged the battery, and the old one was in fact bad (loose terminal), but the new battery does the same d--- thing. And I don't understand how anything besides the battery could kill EVERYTHING including the OEM analog clock. It's not a fuse or fusible link since it resets. The only...

Trying to crank kills electrical system

This'll teach me to leave well enough alone... I was just finished adjusting the timing and my new Weber carb, and I decided that I would go ahead and do the Nutter Bypass that everyone seems to recommend. It was running okay, but the rpms would wander up and down some. Well, first I spliced...

    4wd light backwards (1987 Wrangler)

I don't know when this happened--sometime in the last four months while the Jeep's been sitting in the garage--but my 4WD indicator light is on when the lever is in 2WD and turns off when I shift the transfer case to 4H. (It doesn't run again at the moment, but as I recall it stays off in N and...

idle relays with no idle solenoid

Do the idle relays do anything if the idle solenoid and the Carter carb are both off/replaced on the 258? This is what mine look like (first picture). What can I do with this? Can I just cut the six wires to the relay socket and put caps on them?

1987 4.2 - cranks with the key in my pocket!...

LV--Thank you so much, that helps a lot. I called somebody local and he said to check the rectifier too, so I have that to look at as well. BTW, I noticed that the idle relays look quite nasty when I unplug them. Do those do anything now that someone has removed the idle solenoid and I...

    Alternator bracket 1987 YJ 4.2L

I just took my alternator off and had no idea this part was involved. I have no clue how to put it back on. All I know is that there is a bolt on the back of the alternator that attaches to a slide on the bracket, a short bolt on the top front of the alternator, and two long bolts on the...

1987 4.2 - cranks with the key in my pocket!...

I ended up getting a new starter relay and battery, which fixed the problem for a day. It ran fantastic. But the next day it cranked weakly and then buzzed. I took the battery in tonight and found out it was drained. Do I maybe have a short somewhere else that's draining power? The...
