    79 CJ7 - The Beginning

Update: Re-assembly is shaping up. Drivetrain is assembled. Finally got engine back from machine shop, and the painter is just now starting on the body. Hope to have the body back in the next couple of weeks, get the engine put back together and crank her up for the first time in almost three...

    AMC V8 304 Engine question

I am rebuilding this engine and the camshaft I got calls for 1.82" installed valve spring height. The specs in the Chilton manual says 1.812" installed valve spring height. Is this too much of a difference in this measurement or will it be fine to reuse the valve springs if they are not worn out?

    79 CJ7 - The Beginning

Well, I am more in the middle towards the downhill side of this rebuild. The tub and body parts are at the painter, the engine block and heads are being tanked and checked and rebuilt and the seats are being re-upholstered. Waiting on things to get done and start coming back to me. The engine...

    Front disc brake caliper question

Next question, would it matter if they are on the wrong side? Just to change the orientation of the bleeder screw and hose connection? And no new calipers, just cleaned and painted. New pistons and seals but no new calipers.

    Front disc brake caliper question

Could be wrong side. I know the 2-bolt bracket is on right. Each caliper has a letter stamped into it L or R. I assumed this meant right and left; of course left is on driver side and right on passenger. Tried to post a pic but it won't take it for some reason.

    Front disc brake caliper question

I think I have re-installed the calipers upside down. The bleeder screw is on the top now. The brake hose is too short now when it wasn't before I took them off.

    AMC 20 rear axle question

Can't find something that will fit into the fill plug of the AMC 20 rear axle on a cj7. 1/2" wrench doesn't fit - too big. It looks like a hex, would this be right and what size would it be?

    What exactly is this?

Saw this Jeep (I think) on a college campus today. Thought it was the coolest thing I've seen in a while. I was wondering what it is and what year.

    79 CJ7 - The Beginning

Update on the restore....I've hit a wall because of other things I have to do and this has really slowed down. I have been building fences to keep in the cows and don't have any money left to work on the Jeep. . . .killing me! Here are some new pics.

    Dana 30 questions

There is a hole on top of the axle casing. What is it and why is it there? Is there a part missing here? What do I need to put there?

    Axle locknut sockets

I'm having trouble finding the right size locknut socket so I can take the front brake rotors and shields off the front axle. There are two locknuts and I can't find the right size socket. I need something smaller than a 2 3/8". I think it is a 2 1/4" or 2 1/8". Any suggestions on where to...

    Help with transmission

It's not stuck. I've been trying to use a screwdriver and any other tools I can get up under the ring. I got some snapring tools from my Dad but they don't work either. There is no way to get hold of the snapring with them. This particular one is an internal ring, and very thick. I need to...

    Help with transmission

Thanks for the help. My husband came home and we got it off with a little elbow grease. Now I can't get a snapring off the rear bearing. This thing is driving me crazy. Any special tools that can help get it off?

    Help with transmission

I am really frustrated right now. I am trying to overhaul my t-150 3-speed transmission out of my 79 cj7. I cannot for the life of me get the transfer gear locknut off the rear of the mainshaft. I don't have an impact wrench so this is all manual and elbow grease! Any suggestions on how to...

    79 CJ7 - The Beginning

Have a question, how do I get the steering column removed from the Jeep without tearing it up? I have taken everything off - just about - but can't get the steering column to come out of the splined steering shaft. I have loosened the nut on the clamp but nothing is moving. It is pretty...

    79 CJ7 - The Beginning

Thanks for the advise. I have another place to keep the tub after it is painted where nothing will bother it. I'm going to cover while its off the frame in 'storage' too. When I get done with the frame and other things I'll put it back on. Any suggestions on how to get top layer of paint off...
