    79 CJ7 - The Beginning

Taking everything off the tub to get it painted. Having lots of trouble with rusted bolts, screw heads stripping out, and not having the tools on hand to get the job done.

    Starting the restoration

OK, another question. I have looked up info on how to get out stuck screws, bolts and the like, even broken bolts. Every page I found said 'Don't break the screw extractor off in the screw head.' Unfortunately this has happened (thanks to my husband). My problem is that none of these sites...

    Starting the restoration

Thanks for the advise. I am really going to go over the frame when I get the tub off. I do have another problem; the bolts holding the tub on the frame are turning but not coming out. I can only assume that I broke the bolt loose. The bad thing is that I can't get to the nut to keep it from...

    Starting the restoration

I am about to start taking everything off the body of my 79 cj7 so I can get it painted. Any suggestions on the best way to go about it? I am also going to rebuild the transmission, the carburetor, and work on the frame (clean and paint). Any advise from those who have been through this would...

    Cash for clunkers final numbers

Think about what this might do to car sales in the coming 18 to 24 months. All the cars that would have come off the road during that time came off all at once as a Clunker for Cash. Will we bail out the car companies again when the next two years are slow because they sold record numbers...

    Still squealing

I've been pulling on the alternator for a couple of days now. I took the belts off today and cleaned them with soapy water. I dried them before I put them back on. I also used some steel wool in soapy water on each pulley that accepts a belt. I had sprayed some lubricant yesterday trying to...

    Still squealing

I changed the belts on my 79 cj7 and it is still squealing. The alternator pulley can be turned inside the belt, which I assume can't be good. This jeep has been sitting up in a barn for a while so I was thinking that the pulleys all need to be cleaned well. Am I on the right track or is...

    CJ Transmission work

It's popping out of 2nd gear at times. We were told the synchronizers were the problem as well as some clutch problems. I'm not so sure about the clutch. I'm thinking we may just overhaul the whole thing. Might as well while we have it torn down. Does the overhaul kit come with bushings and...

    CJ Transmission work

About to start working on the T-150 transmission in my CJ7. Any words of advice or special tricks that would help. The mechanic I had look at it says that the 2nd-3rd synchronizer needs to be replaced. I'm not sure exactly what he means. All the drawings I see don't have an actual...

    Rear seats for the CJ

That may be what I do. I'm thinking even if I did find a seat from another vehicle after getting the brackets to install it and re-upholstering it, it would cost more than just buying the finished product new.

    Rear seats for the CJ

Just wondering if there are any other rear seats that will fit into a cj7. I will need brackets as well as the seat. Any suggestions would be great.

    CJ 5 Steering questions

I'm guessing a lot of this can be applied to the cj7. Mine has some play in it and I was going to see if I could tighten it up a bit. I will eventually try to change out most of the parts on the jeep but the steering is pretty important!

    Brake confusion

I am working on the brakes for my 79 cj7 and Chilton says to bleed the brakes from the farthest away from the brake master cylinder to the closest. But 4WD magazine and the website says to bleed the cj from the front to set some proportional setting correctly. Which is it? I need a new brake...

    what do I have?

From Saddle Tramp: "the only year the T18 was mated to a V8 from the factory was 1979, all others years the T18 only came behind an I6. 1977 to 1979 T18s are the wide ratio 6.32 first, all others are close ratio." So if I have a 79 CJ7 with a factory V8 304 then the transmission is more than...

    Brand new at this

No mods. Its been sitting in a barn for the past five years. We weren't even sure it would run. All it took was a new solenoid and a new battery and it fired right up. Of course all the seals are leaking, the hoses are cracking and the transmission needs work but hey, it runs. It will mostly...

    Brand new at this

Hello, I recently became the owner of a 1979 cj7 and have lots of work to do on it. Just wondering how to get started, where to get the best deals on parts, and I would really like to find a soft top that is blue. I would appreciate all the help I can get.:???:
