    4.0l XJ starting problem

Hello again, It's been a long time since I started this and I have finally managed to put a check valve in the pipe just after the tank. I was hoping that would cure the dramatic loss in fuel pressure when I switch off. Unfortunately nothing has changed, so it wasn't the pump check valve after...

1994 XJ steering knuckle ball joints

Thanks for the advice eveyone. I think I will do a combination of both as well as pumping in more grease before I fit it. Re the plug suggestion. For later on I'll see if you can position the U/J so you can remove to plug and fit the nipple and then put it back. I had not noted the plug in the...

1994 XJ steering knuckle ball joints

Thanks for the advice so far. Having had a closer look at what is on the car it seems that I have one greasable ball joint and one that can't be regreased. I have attached a pic of the knuckle and also a pic of what Crown are offering as a replacement which clearly shows two nipples in the pack...

1994 XJ steering knuckle ball joints

Sooner or later due the lousy Spanish roads round here I am going to have to replace the ball joints on the steering knuckle. Getting the parts and fitting them does not seem too bad a job, but I have a question about lubrication. The top joint has a grease nipple which is easy to get at, but...

    4.0l XJ starting problem

Thanks for the latest info. I have done a pressure check today and your diagnosis is spot on Thanks. On turning the key to run I got 30 psi and on the second go got 37 psi. When I turned the key off it lost ALL pressure in about 3 or 4 seconds. Running at low idle it settled at 38 psi and 44 psi...

    4.0l XJ starting problem

If push comes to shove and I need to replace an injector I think I should go the the 4 hole type. Can you advise which is a good replacement? Can you include Maker, part number etc? I have worked on many diesel injectors but never before on petrol (sorry gas) ones.

    4.0l XJ starting problem

I have done the check and there definitely seems to be a loss of pressure as it fires up quickly when doing the key thing. I will be borrowing a pressure gauge from a friend this week. What I need to know is how to pinpoint the leak as there seem to be two possible places. One is the pump check...

    Swing out wheel carrier XJ.

I have a swing out spare wheel carrier on my 4.0lit XJ. I believe these were a factory option for a short time. Has anybody any documentary evidence that these were original fitments? I am looking for a picture from a manual or brochure that clearly shows this so I can prove that it is original...

    4.0l XJ starting problem

Something has changed. I have two 4lit XJs and until recently they both started with the first flick of the key, winter or summer. Now one of them, the 1994 one, needs a lot more cranking than it used to, but it always starts. I have checked the usual things like plugs and distributor cap which...

1994 XJ 4.0l lambda sensor mystery

I have upset something. after fruitless attempts to get the sensor out of the cat I resorted to WD 40 and then my old faithful penetrating oil, diesel, which I have used for years on seized components. Today the engine cut out dead on a roundabout. It restarted OK seconds later. Driving back...

1994 XJ 4.0l lambda sensor mystery

I have not tried this yet as it means removing panels etc. I have the dreaded Test coming up on 21st for re-plating the car from UK plates to Spanish. Everything sees to be working OK at the moment so I'll have a look after the test is done. I will also get an idea of the exhaust pipe emissions...

1994 XJ 4.0l lambda sensor mystery

I have given up trying to find this part despite days of searching so here is what I have done. For Jeep Cherokee XJ fitted with after catalyst Temperature Probe Some European specification RHD Cherokees have been fitted with a temperature probe where an after-cat lambda/oxygen sensor can...

1994 XJ 4.0l lambda sensor mystery

I have been given the following Jeep part number 52079197 which comes up as a temperature sensor for a RHD European spec on a Mopar site but I cannot see any further details. Rear O2 sensors did not appear till later. Comparing the pic above to what I have shows a much fatter item, mine only...

1994 XJ 4.0l lambda sensor mystery

I have been advised that this is not an oxygen sensor but a temperature sensor. The mystery is why it is fitted to my Jeep when after cat oxygen sensors did not come in till 1998. I can find no mention of temp sensors. I don't know its purpose. Is it simply to warn of high exhaust temps or does...

1994 XJ 4.0l lambda sensor mystery

Hello, I will be fitting a new cat shortly and may have to fit a new rear, (after cat) oxygen sensor if the current one gets broken. I have hunted high and low but can find nothing like the one currently fitted so can someone please help. Apart from the baffling number of choices and equivalent...

Cherokee 1994 XJ Front Axle question

I have swopped over the RHS tyres and the problem seems to have gone away. I have not done a long run yet, but locally on smooth roads things seem to be quieter. I will jack up the back end and check for runout on the rim and tyre. It is possible that a large local pothole and believe me there...

Can you tell me what a cap seal is and where it lives? I may already know but you have different terminology in the US. Regards Mike
