Replace the lower radiator hose with a new one. They can collapse internally (water gets between 2 layers of rubber and swells the opening closed) and starves the water pump of coolant, but still looks and feels OK. LBR

Try pulling the air cleaner off and start the CJ when it's stone cold. After fired, the choke plate should NOT be completely closed.. (I think it's called "the choke pull down adjustment"). When it's running, manually tip the choke open ever so little. If the rig smooths out and runs better...

I would not recommend a spool with a lot of driving on asphalt. With meaty tires and the Jeep's sharp turning radius, you should have a bit of forgiveness when turning tightly. Eating up tires would be a secondary concern of mine in your case. The stress on the internals in a dry parking lot...
