Mine did the same thing after the transmission drop. Cutting the hole larger helped a little but the rubber boot was still in the way. Had to move the boot back about 1/2" and that fixed it. You could also try heating up the shifter and bending it slightly forward.

Did you check under the dash where the master comes through the firewall? It will usually leak on the inside of the jeep. Could also be your slave. Don't know for sure on your year but my 93 has an internal slave which involves removing the transmission....pain in the butt!

Had the same problem in my 93. Pulled apart the dash and found the circuit board for the speedo/tach corroded and the wires on the board melted in half. I figure I got too much water behind the dash from a leaky windshield frame seal and leaving the top down in the rain.
