How are you reading an error code on a '99 TJ? My 99 always read 2.5 when I tried that code reading trick, until I discovered that 99s can't do it. 99TJ s are one of the few years that Jeep took the on board code reader out. Something to do with the sentry key option. Get yourself a cheap...

Simple fix first! I had that too. Just spray some silicone lubricant in and around the rubber grommet thing that wraps around the steering column as it goes through the firewall. SPray a liberal amoubnt on. I did this early last fall and have not had any noise since.

Synchromesh is good for your AX15 or 5 manual transmission. I used Mobil 1 synth SUV Formula 75w-140 for my diffs. Its about $12.95 @ qt. and it is suited for heavy duty use like towing. Also it already has any additives in it for Trac- loc, etc.

Oh by the way, As goofy as it sounds the transfer case takes automatic transmission fluid! ATF+3 to be exact.

AX5 and AX15 trannies can't use gl-5 and gl-6 gear lubes. There is additives in them that eat the brass synchros. There was also a typo in the service manuals ,owners manuals and probably chiltons that says to use 75W-90 gl-5. What they meant was 75w-90 GL-3. If you go to the dealer and get the...
