1987 CJ How Reasonable to Restore

I did a frame up restore on my cj7. Leetp is right about rust. Before you buy check underneath front to back frame and body for rust. Under seats, roll bar mounts are places where rust hides pretty well. These can be expensive fixes if you have to send it out.

    258 timing advance

So I put my cj7 in a Trump parade last November. Made the 10mile drive, but at around mile 7 Big “O” died. How embarrassing! I pulled over and after cooling it started back up. I finished the parade and went home uneventful. Since then I haven’t been able to drive it more than 3 miles before it...

    heater blower

I upgraded my ‘80 CJ7 with the 1973 blazer blower motor. The previous reply from JPNinPA is right in what he’s saying, and it will definitely increase the amount of hot air pushed through the heating ducts. I would go ahead and change the heater core as well, since it all has to come out anyway...

    East Coast Gears

1980 CJ7 all stock I want to replace the ring & pinion in my front Dana 30 and AMC 20 3.07 with 3.73. I found everything I need online at east coast gears. Ring gear and pinion are manufactured by Motive. Have any of you used Motive Gear and can I expect them to be OEM or better quality?

    Start up.

I experienced the same problem when I put a long block 258 w/ a new weber in my '80 CJ. I failed to set the timing with the vacuum advance hose removed from the distributor and plugged. That was the first issue. The second issue was the marks on the timing cover. My timing cover had one mark...

Oil dipstick tube sheered off at block

If it is flush with the block, I would try to find something small (1/32-1/8" dia) and pointed to drive in between the tube and block. This would collapse the tube relieving the tight fit. Maybe use a small drift or center punch to start collapseing the tube at the top then switch to the small...

    I would appreciate you advice...

Have you thought about an older('75-'84) fully restored CJ model. They are about as bear boned you get. I haven't priced new jeep's but I would think if you were patient one could be found for much less the cost of a new one.

    Ughhhhh

If it has the same size ujoints on both ends i think it could most definitely be possible. Drive shafts are balanced for rotation and I would suspect that the vibration is coming from the ujoint that is too small. You need to swap ends with the shaft and have the correct unjoints put in or...

    ZDDP or Not

Need some thoughts here. I bought a 258 long block with flat tappet valve lifters which requires a ZDDP additive because the oils now days has little to no zinc. The zinc coats the cam and lifters to prevent flattening of the cam lobes during break in. I have reached the break in mileage and...

    Heater Fan Motor

Hopefully someone can help me out! So I upgraded my heater blower with a '73 GMC Jimmy blower. My wife and went riding a couple of hours Saturday and I burned up the fan resistor. I have been looking for a replacement with no luck. I ordered two different ones from OReilly's today and they will...

    O2 sensor question

I have been thinking about your problem and read through your post again. You said you are getting error code P0161: O2 Sensor Heater Circuit (Bank 2 Sensor 2) and another post mentioned code 0058 heater circuit high error I believe. With these codes I am inclined to think your issue is going to...

    Heater Fan Motor

LOL!! It would be kind of like sticking your hand in an unfamiliar dogs house. You may get bit!! I still haven't been able to see how well the new fan will heat the cab. Before I start cutting I'm want to see how it does.

    O2 sensor question

Is the sensor you're having problems with down stream of the catalyst? The pre catalyst sensor(s) are closer to the exhaust manifold/header and probably heating up and working within the programmed time in the PCM and the post Catalyst sensor is not. Usually there will be a huge temp drop...

    O2 sensor question

The black wire is the sensing voltage and should have a mv signal from .1 to .9mv. I noticed you were reading 4.17 V on the black wire. That is too much. The O2 sensor should output between .4-.6mv at normal operating temp. An O2 sensor doesn't begin outputting a signal until it reaches the...

    Heater Fan Motor

Amen Turbogus. That thing moves some air, but I also understand what 78cj71ton is saying about recirculating cabin air to cut down on window fogging. I just opened the vent as far as I could to try it. It hasn't been cold enough here yet to put through a good test.
