so ive got a 304 that is going to be undergoing a rebuild over the next year as a project for my yj. ive also got access to a t176 and a t4 (i thnk its a t4). my question is will a np231 tcase bolt up to either one. i can get one from a 6 cylinder and i have a 4cyl right now. ive got an sye for mine and i want to spend as least money as possible for now so if i can i want to reuse the tcase and have it bolted up before i put it under the jeep. any info let me know.

Both transmissions have the same bolt pattern and spline count as the 6 cylinder version of the NP231, but the clocking is different. I don't really know if you can use it, but the possibility is there.....maybe with a clocking ring.

If you go this route, get the T-176. The T4 is a light duty car transmission that never should have been put in a Jeep to begin with.

how about i just drill new holes to get the clocking right? all the holes all on a flange so it shouldnt be a big deal just as long as i center it right and all that mess and seal it up good

As long as your new bolt holes didn't break into the old ones, I guess you could. Even if they did happen to interfere with the old holes, you could make some threaded plugs and weld them in place, then just drill the new ones. I've never done it, but I've heard of other people redrilling to clock the case, so it can be done.
