360 Swap...

Well the 304 in my Jeep has finally made it's way bad to that big assembly plant in the sky... (or Detroit whichever)

On to the better... I have a built 360 (AMC) that I am replacing it with .. Outside of the obvious things to replace(clutch, fluids, maybe mounts....) Is there anything in particular I need to look at replacing...
Oh and yes... I know the AMC Model 20 needs replaced.. this motor was snapping one piece axels... so that's a given lol

Also .. I want to trade my Hard top for a complete soft top system for my Jeep
it is a 1978 CJ5 anyone got anything?..lol
and looking for Dana 44 Rear or anything better equiped to handle the extra strain of the 360

There's a 360 in 'Black Betty' and it seems the motor mounts were undisturbed. As I recall the 304-360-401 AMC's are all the same externally.

You may want to replace the front with a Dana 44. to handle the power.
Dana 30's don't like v8's

Unless your planning on running your Jeep hard on the rocks and on the trails, i wouldn't worry much about the axles. I've been running my CJ7 with the model 30 in the front and 20 on the rear axle and haven't snapped an axle once yet. I run mine hard on the mud and easy on the rocks and the only thing that i had to upgrade so far was the front driveshaft that looks like a twisted pretzel after pulling a tree stump for my father in law.

there should be nothing needed to swap out the 304 for a 360, if ther eis something worn, might be a good time to change.

I also wouldn't worry about the axles. I know a number of people that run a similar set up and flog their junk pretty hard. If you put 1 piece alloy rears, your rear's strength will be similar in strength to a 44.

Any personal suggestions on the one piece axles... any one brand better than another?
and the only reason I brought up the motor mounts was because after 30+ years they might need a touch up...lol

I prefer Moser for the M20. I am always impressed by the quality.. also Dutchman is a good quality axle as well.

I personally do not like Alloy brand shafts, I have not had great luck with them, other people might have beeter experience.

As for me, since I'm on a limited budget, I normally wait 'till something breaks before I replace major componentry. Not to say that if something shows signs of going gunny sack do I take chances, especially in the sticks, but by now 'Black Betty' is just about complete with equipment at least.
