86 YJ popping out of gear

A friend of mine has a 86 YJ, we recently installed a rusty's 4" lift with a t-case drop. We haven't got around to installing an SYE in it. But when he drives it pops out of reverse only. I did pull off the center console and cut away the metal where the stick would hit to fix the problem. It solved it for a few weeks and then started doing it again, so we pulled off the console again...its not hitting, but it still pops out of reverse after driving about 10 feet. I can't think of anything else..I don't think its the driveshaft because wouldn't that do it in any gear?..not just reverse.

There is no '86 YJ, '87 was the first year. The 4.2L had the Peugeot BA10/5 manual transmission from '87 to mid-year '89 and was known for popping out of reverse. Either hold it in (like I used to) or replace the transmission with an AX15 from a '94+.

My 87 did the samething couldn't figure it out for a long time, come to find out it was the boot had to cut it a bit now its fine no more holding it in reverse.

Mine did the same thing after the transmission drop. Cutting the hole larger helped a little but the rubber boot was still in the way. Had to move the boot back about 1/2" and that fixed it. You could also try heating up the shifter and bending it slightly forward.

Mmm, so maybe wehn we put back the center consol and boot it might be still hitting huh?

I'll poke around with that idea
