Audio question...

Hey there, this isn't for my jeep, but I was wondering if anyone knows about car audio stuff. I was just wondering if I could use 8 ohm woofers in a sub box. I know that car audio subs are usually 4 ohms. Does it matter? I have 2 15" woofers out of these giant stereo speakers I got for nothing....

any help would... help.

What little I know about it.....if you've got the amps, then the extra ohms shouldn't be a problem (amps=current.....ohms=resistance). If you've got a big-arse amp, then maybe the extra ohms will save your speakers from blowing!!! (My limited knowledge of DC circuits..........if it were me, I'd give it a shot and see......I'm pretty skeptical about what anyone tells me, anyway!!! :lol: :lol: )
 
8 ohm subs would be fine. If you wire them single channel parallel, it will be a 4 ohm load and you would get the most power out of that wiring. If you wire them in series, it will be a 16 ohm load and will be weak
 
Snitty is right.

If the amplifier you are using for them is bridegable (it should be unless it is really really old or really really cheap) , You can wire them in parallel creating a 4 ohm load.

Well I havn't bought an amp yet, so I guess I'm in luck, now I can look for one that I can do that on...
I never have delt with amps before so I don't know how to wire them "single channel parallel".

Oh and when I am looking for an amp, will it say "bridgeable" on the description? or is there some other terminology used.

those are both capable of running mono. Look at the "... x 1" for the mono channel output. Those are cheapo amps though, the second one says 450x1. It probably only honestly runs at 300 at most, which should be fine for you though. I prefer not to use low quality amps due to a high level of distortion and they are prone to electrical interference

Thanks, but those were just for example... I have had good luck with clarion products so I'm looking for one of those.

Wattage x 1 @ 4 Ohms RMS is what you are looking for to get an actual power rating.

Power output is exaggerated by almost every manufacturer, exceptions being your higher end brands. RMS (root mean square or something like that) is the actual clean useable power output while power ratings followed by "max" are almost completely useless.

A $20 amp claiming 600 watts of power is ridiculous.

Also pay attention to the signal to noise ratio. Below 90 is real junk. Above 100 is where your better quality products will be.

Example: 200 watts x 2 @ 4 Ohms Max, with a signal to noise ratio of 80 = don't waste your money.

If you want to power two 8 ohm 15" woofers wired in parallel (positives conected together and negatives connected together) operating at 4 ohms, A good clean amp with a true 50-100 watts of power would be surprisingly loud and clean. Alot cleaner and louder than a cheapie claiming to produce 400W ;)

I used to sell Clarion, and was a dealer when they came out with their "Clarion Pro" line in the early 90's. It was pretty good quality back then, but as for todays products I am out of the loop. Specs will be the tell tale...

what TC sead. dont waist your time and $$$ trying to buy and setup anything that has lightning audio on it. depending on the cash you have to play with might i suggest ARC. www.arcaudio.com the best amps ive ever used.

yup. most are. you can get some that are not but i wouldnt recoment them unless thats what you want. the SVC are still some awsome subs but the DVCs have better power handaling and the SQL is amaizing. i had one ARC 12d4 (12" dual 4 ohm VC) running off a clarion 400.2 amp in a slot port 1.3qf box and hit myself a 143 in the lanes. best audio equipment out there.

Dual voice coil subs were a rarity when I was doing installs. How or why would they have better power handling or sound quality? I see no advantage to them other than having more wiring options.

thay are built stronger. at least in ARCs case. i will never buy another sub or amp unless its an ARC

DVC subs can handle more power, eletrically at least... they may not always stand up to more physical abuse, but the windings do handle twice the power of a SVC counterpart. Plus, they are capable of overcoming air resistance much better. If you have a sealed box, the compression and decompression of the inside air helps rebound the driver. When the air compresses, its pressure raises, increasing the resistance against the driver. The voice coils in a sub act as electromagnets to repel and attract with the fixed magnet. Doubling the strength of the electromagnet (doubling the voice coil) is a similar concept to doubling the strength/size of the fixed magnet, and we all know that all the best subs can be found with enormous magnets
