Hello all this is my first post ever just wanted to start off saying hello.....anyways on to the real business I have a 89 yj islander that i recently purchased for a good price it is my first jeep ever and i love it, its 4.2 litre 5 speed the problem Im having is that i cant shift the jeep into gear and yes i know how to drive 5 speed. What i noticed is that the clutch pedal gives no resistance when i push it down when i checked the fluid in the master clutch resevoir it was empty so i checked the haynes book and got dot 3 brake fluid and filled it up i read a few posts about this stuff but im still confused can someone give me any input if im going the right direction and explain the bleeding porcess

thanks for any input that you guys can give

I don't think there's a bleeder valve on that year, just top of the clutch master cylinder and pump the bejesus out of it, see if the pedal pressure gets any better.

hello there i finally got around to beating the bejesus out of the clutch it got a bit better but still not a to much more pressure i know this is a stupid question but how do you filll the transmission fluid

The bleeder valve will be on the driver side of the transmission where two tubes come out. If you have the the earlier '89 with the POS Peugeot trans or the more desirable AX15, they should both be on the same side. Bleeding is straight forward just as bleeding brakes. Use fresh DOT 3 and make sure the MC is topped off. Have someone pump the clutch pedal 3~4 times and hold while you put a length of clear hose on the nipple, put the other end into a clean container with some BF in it, open the valve a 1/4 turn momentarily then close. Do this until no bubbles are present. Usually 5~6 cycles like this will bring your clutch back to full pressure. Hope this helps!

(Transmission fluid fill) This is a fun one. If you have the Peugeot (which is identified by a split case held together by 8 bolts) then on the passenger side, there will be a bolt with a square hole that will look like a 3/8" extension bar will fit in - it won't which sucks! What I did was sacrifice a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter by filling it down to fit in the hole. The drain plug is on the driver side rear and IS a 3/8" fitting. This should tell you how great the Peugeot is:rolleyes: If you have the AX15 (which is identified by an intermediate plate sandwiched in the middle of the trans) then a bolt on the driverside should get you there.
